General information
Introduction
The circuit diagrams wntained in this Chapter have
been deuised to provide both a theoretical and
practical approach to fault diagnosis.
W i h the exception of Section M3 (which
prwides details of the way in whrch power is
distributed through the electricat system). each section
contains details of individual circuits or system& Also
contain& within each settion is information regarding
the lmtion ofcomponents.
The electrical system is 12 vok negative earth. All
vottages ouoted in this Chapter are diren cumem (dc)
unless athewise specrfied
If when using the diagrsm component and
connector codes. any doubt exists concerning the
descript~onor Iowtion of items connected with the
bodywork of the car. reference should be made to
Chaprer S. Sectlon S1 .
Information on the electrical circuits/components
of the air condirioning synem and emission control
systems are contained in Chapter C and Chapter U
respectrvelw
Component identification
The more commonly used components of the electrical
system are represented on The wiring diagrams by the
following symbols.

From VI N SCAZSO006GCX13860* (excluding
WN SCAZN0004FCH 14000 * t o VIN
SCAZN0009FCH1402 5 # ) a new type of fuseboard
is fitted incorporating tittel or Buss fuses (these fuses
are n a interchangeablewith Bulgin type fuses).
Therefore when warking to a wiring diagram Or
component location showing the earlier Butgin type of
fuse. reference must be made 10figure M1- l .

Toeboard connections
Ensure that the engine comparrmem toeboard
connections are kept clean and are protected against
the ingress of water by the appliwHon of a damp
proofing agent such as W040.
-
Test equipment
It is essential that only recommended test eouipment
is used. othewise damage may ocwr to an electrical
wmponent/eircuit
In order to take electrical measurements cf either
voltage, curr'ent or resisarnte a suitable meter is
required If a multi-meter is being used it is important
that before connecting the meter
the
cornponent/circuit being tested the correct range is
selected on the meter. Before using an ohmmeter on
a component/circuit dways disconnect the battery.
Although a 12 voh test lamp may be used for
fault finding, never use a test lamp on circuits that
contain electronic components. s i n k damage 10 these
components may result.

Guides t o electrical diagnosis
1 Always try to verity the exam nature and history of
the complaint If the operation of a particular circuit is
net fully understood. a malfunction m a y be reported.
.
when in fact the system is operating correctly.
2. Familiarize yourself with the operation of the
circuit to be tested. Also the lapout of the components
in that circuit Make reference to rhe appropriate
section within this Chapter.
3. Always consider the symptoms and then decide
on the most advantageous and convenient poim a
which to commence your investigation. The
unnecessary remwal of items of trim is costly and
damage could result
Fitting electrical accsssorks
When fming electrical accessories it is recommended.:
that they are wired from the fuseboard and that the
fuse is of the correct size and rating. Atso, it is
essential that the correct size of cable is used.
Spare fuse positions are available on the
fuseboard. They are designed to take fuses of either
10 amperes (small size fuse) or 20 amperes rating.
Do not under any cirurrnstances rsplaca an
existing fuse with one of a Jargar size or higher
rating.
If the accessory incorporates an in-line fuse it is
essential that the in-line fuse is of a lower rating than
that on the fuseboard.

Relays
Introduction
A relay is an electrically operated eonrrol that is
activared from a separate componenr e.g. switch.
Fining relays eliminmes the need for heavy duty type
switches and enables light duty types of switches te
be used.
An example of hew B circuit containing a relay
operates is shown in figure M2-1.When the comaerr
of the switch (irem 1) ate made the control circuh of
the relay (indicated by the amwed lines) provides a
12 voh positive feed to the relay coil (item 2) *us
energizing the coil. Energizing the coil causes the
normally open wntaca marked 30 and 87 to close.
f his then allows a 12 vott positive feed from the
supply circun fuse (item 3) to be fed through the
comscts to supply the component (item 4).
Retays are also used to provide changeover
f u n n ~ o n si.e. 10change from one circuit to another. An
example of how the changeover function is
accomplished.is shown in figures M2.2, M2-3, and
M2-4.
Wih bmh switches (A and B) in the open position
(seefig. M2-2)bulbs 1 and 2 are extinguished. By
closing the conram of switch B (seefig. M2-3) s
12 vok positive feed is supplied from the supply fuse
(hem 3) through the nomally closed relay contacts 30
and 87a to illuminate bulb 2.
Operation of switch A (seefig M2-4) energizes
the relay coil. This transfers the feed from relay
contacts 30 and 87a to contaas 30 and 87. this
causes bulb 2 to be extinguished and bub 7 to
illuminate.
Locstion
With two exceptions relays are interchangeable. The
stop tamp failure relay is of a different type and cannot
physically be interchanged with other relays on rhe ear.
The staner relay on cars fined with a blue Lucas
{round bodied] type relay must not be interchanged
with other relays on ?he car.
figure M2-5 shows the position of the relays
fitted to early Silver Spirit, Silver Spur. and Mulsanne

a d Comimnral cars prior to 1985 model year cars.
The fining of relays is dependent upon individual
car specification. For example on cars conforming fo a
North American specification which prohibits the
fining of rear fog lamps. the appropriate relay will be
omitted.
The relays ere positioned in groups. Access to ?he
relay group on the driveis side of the car (interior
nrlrys) requires tht removal of the knee roll trim.
Two relays are mounted on each from seat
mechanism, access is gained by removing the
apvropriafe seat cushion
Removal of the lvggage companrnent right-hand
mm carpet will g k access to all the relays in the
luggage compartment
