The love of gardening, that is, and the big plans I have for my garden. Gardening is kind of like ice cream to me. My eyes are bigger than my stomach, and my dreams and plans for my garden are bigger than my time. Gardening books, seed catalogs, and notes about what I planted last year, what worked and what didn’t, fill my workspace. It reminds me of my mom and her garden. Her very large garden that she fed 5 kids from through the summer and winter. The fact that we were poor, and her garden and orchard were what fed us, was a fact I didn’t realize until I was much older. I remember shelling peas with her on the front stoop under the light of the moon in early summer. The hot kitchen (yes, there was no air conditioning) where we blanched the corn to cut it off the cobs and freeze it for the winter. The tomatoes and the beans that never seemed to stop growing and we never stopped canning. Digging potatoes in the fall and putting them into the root cellar. The early spring strawberries and asparagus which lasted briefly before summer set in but were so good. Making strawberry jam and apple jelly. The old pressure cooker she used to can everything with. The day I didn’t pay enough attention to it, and it blew its little top right into the ceiling. The tin foil she would put in the cherry trees to keep the birds out. The summer the cattle got out while we were at church and were in the garden when we got home. Well, that was bad for my dad. The orchard my grandfather bought for her when we moved to the farm I grew up on. My brother getting stuck in one of the trees and my other brother going to get a saw to get him out. Dad stopped that one before it got out of hand. I really don’t need all those books because I learned from the best teacher. I may have a hard time finding the seeds she planted before we made everything a hybrid, but I think it is really about what I learned from her all those years ago. The nurturing of her garden was nurturing us. My mom was a tough cookie. She worked the fields with my dad, she had 5 kids in 10 years, we lived in a 2-bedroom house with a converted garage for my parents’ bedroom with one bathroom and no shower. She baked and canned and fed us well. Looking back, I see that food was her love language. I am so ready to get my hands into the dirt, to fall asleep exhausted, to plant peas and potatoes by the light of the moon (and maybe the big shop lights). To watching the orchard bloom in the spring and having fresh bouquets from my garden grace my tables and desk. Fresh fruit and vegetables for dinner with a good glass of wine or a beer. There is a saying about gardening that goes, “Into the garden I go to lose my mind and find my soul.” To be correct John Muir said it first, and it was forests and not gardens, but I am digressing. I hope this spring brings you all the joy it brings me. Plant something in the dirt and care for it. You will learn something from the experience. Oh, and don’t get the tractor stuck!
