This new platform allowed the team to create a more dynamic feel to the car by lowering the driver’s seating position, adjusting the steering wheel angle, reducing the bonnet height and using larger wheels. In search of improved cornering precision, Chief Engineer Yasuhiro Sakakibara and his test drivers then headed to California’s iconic Pacific Coast Highway. After this the ES 300h prototypes moved to Europe for extensive trials on Germany’s highways and country roads. Finally, after months of fine-tuning by a Lexus master driver, the new ES 300h was ready for production: A car that is both exceedingly responsive to drive, yet amazingly comfortable and quiet in which to travel. 03 To power the new ES 300h we developed a next-generation Self-Charging Hybrid that delivers outstanding fuel economy combined with exhilarating performance.
