Smooth and precise responsiveness produce braking and steering that connect in a steady, seamless rhythm so the car and driver become one. To enhance comfort, Lexus IS engineers examined various factors that impact driving comfort such as vibration and harshness on bumpy roads. They identified vibration points in the high-rigidity frame and made fine adjustments to how those vibrations are transmitted, released, and suppressed to deliver a smoother more fulfilling driving experience. Lightweight, high-rigidity body Toachieve high rigidity, Lexus IS engineers focused on advanced welding technology, adding 55 fine-pitch spot welding points around the front side members, and adopting laser screw welding and adhesives. Body rigidity has been enhanced further by stiffening the radiator support sides and rear pillar inner members. Lastly, by reducing the weight of the front and rear doors and trunk lid, the engineers lowered the moment of inertia to enhance driving performance. Aerodynamics The advanced aerodynamics of the IS contribute to better fuel efficiency, a quieter cabin, and sportier driving performance. Unifying the belt moulding and panels on the sides of the body creates a strong turbulence rectifying effect, while fins integrated into the rocker panels help to control air flow and reduce roll. In addition, front air spats provides excellent stability and reduce turbulence. While aero-stabilising fins on the rear combination lamps and underbody contribute to outstanding steering stability and response. Chassis (Front and rear suspension/Swing valve shock absorbers) The double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension were optimised to deliver exhilarating driving. Refining and tuning of individual components provide excellent turning performance, steering response and feel. The adoption of swing valve shock absorbers on both the front and rear suspension dampens even minimal body movement, contributing to supple ride comfort at different speeds and in varying conditions. These refinements provide a flat vehicle posture, excellent manoeuvrability, stability, and outstanding ride comfort. Chassis (Hub bolts) The adoption of hub bolts with a spherical seat to fasten the wheels to the hub bearings helps realise high axle rigidity while reducing un-sprung weight. To bring driver and car ever closer together and sharpen the driver’s senses we combined advanced digital technologies, including simulation technologies, and the refined sensibilities of Lexus engineers on the development site. The result has been to open up new horizons in driving performance and comfort. Our designs were put to the test on the demanding third circuit at Toyota Technical Centre at Shimoyama, a 5.3km course with a 16 70m height difference modelled on the famed Nürburgring in Germany, one of the world’s toughest racetracks. Much of the road surface is undulating. Corners at different angles appear one after another, and jumps and blind corners dot the track. It is an exacting, challenging circuit that requires both driver and car to live up to their highest potential. Designed especially for vehicle development, the track features a service station that allows for immediate feedback from test drivers to engineers. This has enabled the IS to be honed to a point where it offers an engaging level of communication between car and driver. It features a sound generator that boosts the sound pressure level of specific frequencies in the engine air intake to generate a distinctively sporty engine note when accelerating in the mid-to-high rpm ranges. In addition, IS300 F SPORT models are equipped with ASC which generates an exhilarating linear and natural sound from low through to high rpms, in direct response to accelerator operation. 8-Speed SPDS (Sport Direct Shift) The 8-speed automatic transmission provides smooth shifting for a pleasing driving feel. It enables gear changes in as little as 0.2 seconds when the M position is selected, to deliver the authentic sports driving performance of a manual transmission. In D position with Sport Mode, it downshifts to the optimal gear with the drop in acceleration at corner entry, then holds the selected gear through the turn to provide powerful acceleration exiting the corner.*2 Driver Intention/Driving Scene Support Control On turbo engine models, adaptive control discerns the driver’s intention and style based on input from lateral and longitudinal G sensors and vehicle speed, and selects the optimal gear to match. In normal relaxed driving, it selects gears in a low rpm range for quiet driving. During more aggressive driving, it selects gears in an rpm range that prioritises responsiveness, with dynamic acceleration for sports driving that mirrors manual shifting even in the D range. 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged engine A feeling of exhilarating acceleration creates a sense of unity with the vehicle and boosts driving enjoyment. This engine uses advanced D-4ST technology, which optimises fuel efficiency by combining the twin scroll turbocharger and Dual VVT-i (Intake side: VVT-iW) to optimally control the timing of intake/exhaust valve opening/ closing. For the IS, the Premium Surround Sound System features a powerful amplifier driving 17 speakers. Power rear window sunshade (Exclusive for F SPORT) Power controls for this convenient sunshade make it easy to provide shade and privacy in the rear seats. Please inquire at your local dealer for details on the availability of features. 29 INTELLIGENCE SEVEN SAFETY BSM (Blind Spot Monitor System) (Exclusive for F SPORT) When the quasi-millimetre-wave radars in the rear bumper detect vehicles in adjacent lanes that aren’t visible in the door mirrors, the system activates a warning indicator in the relevant door mirror the moment a vehicle enters this blind spot. PKSB (Parking Support Brake) PKSB detects stationary objects such as walls in the direction of travel, as well as vehicles approaching from behind while reversing*2, and alerts the driver on the display and with an audible warning. In addition, in the event that the system determines a collision is likely, it applies drive force and brake force control to help avoid minor collisions and mitigate damage. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags The IS features dual-stage SRS airbags (Front seats), SRS knee airbags (Front seats), SRS side airbags (Front and rear seats), and SRS curtain shield airbags (Front and rear door windows).*1 30 *1 The SRS airbags are supplemental devices to be used with the seatbelts. The driver and all passengers in the vehicle must wear their seatbelts properly at all times. Never install a rear-facing CRS (Child Restraint System) on the front passenger’s seat. For a forward-facing CRS, it is recommended you use it in the rear seats. Please do not use accessories for the seats which cover the parts where the SRS side airbags should inflate. Such accessories may prevent the SRS side airbags from activating correctly, causing serious injury (Lexus genuine seat covers are specifically designed for models equipped with the SRS side airbags.
