Lexus in Europe
After the highly successful launch in Europe of three new models in 2000,
the Lexus family has grown again in 2001, with three more additions which
raise the benchmarks and redefine key areas of the luxury car market.
Few brands have ever grown so rapidly. For most of Lexus’ first decade in
Europe the range consisted of just two models, the ls400 and from 1993, the
gs300, with annual sales of between two and three thousand units. From
1999 that changed rapidly with the launch of the is200 sports sedan and in
2000, the launch of the Lexus ls430 luxury sedan, gs430 executive performance
sedan and the rx300 luxury sport-utility, strengthened both sales and the
general awareness of Lexus in Europe. Even though the three new models
were only launched in the last quarter of the year, sales rose by over 10%,
with more than 18,000 units sold.
This year, the range of new Lexus models has not only redefined both the
Lexus brand and expectations of luxury car buyers. They have also completed,
for the first time, a “family” of new Lexus models that meets a wide range of
luxury requirements. In addition to generating increased sales, expected to
reach over 22,000 units in 2001, the broader Lexus range is destined to
trigger increased awareness and desirability for the brand in the future.
The new sc430 was designed from the outset to be both a styling icon and
the world’s finest all-round luxury cabriolet, with an integrated aluminium
retractable roof offering the “best of both worlds”, combining open-air
driving pleasure with Lexus standards of comfort and refinement.
The sc430 adds passion and “must have” desirability to the Lexus pursuit
of perfection.
The sc430 combines the highest levels of performance with refinement from
its 286 DIN hp, 4.3-litre V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing – intelligent
(VVT-i), coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission. 18-inch wheels,
double wishbone suspension and an exceptionally rigid body structure
ensure class-leading dynamics and handling.
The Lexus is300 sedan builds on the attributes that have made the original
Lexus is200 such a tempting offer: it offers an excellent chassis, that regains
for enthusiastic drivers the feeling that they are in control. Extending the
capacity of its straight six, Variable Valve Timing - intelligent (VVT-i) engine
from 2 litres to 3 for the is300, it boosts power from 155 DIN hp to
214 DIN hp and maximum torque from 195 to 289Nm.
Lexus
3
Driver control on the Lexus is300 is further enhanced by the use of a new
5-speed automatic transmission with an “E-shift” push-button gear-change
system. Buttons mounted on the steering wheel allow the driver to change
gear with a faster, smoother shift to further enhance performance and driving
pleasure. Minor styling updates distinguish the latest sedan and have also
been passed on to the is200.
The is300 SportCross demonstrates Lexus’ ability to create a spectacular
new concept in luxury and performance car design. The “cross-over” concept
introduces radical new styling combining the dynamic performance and
handling of the is300, with five-door versatility. Clever detailing enhances
the exciting styling and the distinctive, cross-over silhouette.
The SportCross shares the powertrain and styling of the is300 sedan and
pays careful attention to structural rigidity and weight distribution, including
the use of an aluminium tailgate, to ensure that it handles as well as the best
sports sedans. Clever interior design ensures that while having a rear profile
akin to a sleek coupe, the is300 SportCross can accommodate over 280 litres
of luggage under its parcel cover with rear seats upright. A further 96 litres of
space is available in additional storage boxes, while with seats folded, items
over 2.6m long can be carried.
“Each year we are growing at Lexus” says Kirk Edmondson, Deputy General
Manager of Lexus in Europe. “Firstly, in terms of volume and acceptance, many
more people are now aware of Lexus. The volume success of the Lexus is200, of
which over 13,000 were sold in 2000, is allowing Lexus to take advantage of the
brand’s youth, its refinement and understated character.”
The sales success of the full Lexus “family” also allows further reinforcement
of the traditional prime Lexus values of customer service and satisfaction.
It has been a cornerstone of Lexus’ success in the USA, where last year the
marque won 34 of the 41 J. D. Power customer satisfaction awards for which
it was eligible. In the United Kingdom, the first European market to be evaluated
by J. D. Power, this year was the first in which Lexus was included. Not only
did the brand emerge as number 1 overall, but each eligible Lexus model was
placed in the top 6, with a number 1 ranking for the ls400, 3rd place for
the gs and 6th for is200.
4
“In 1999 we sold just over 15,000 Lexus models in Europe. In 2000, we sold over
18,000. This year we expect to sell over 22,000” said Edmondson.
“This success has increased the number of sales per dealer, increasing their viability,
their numbers and our development of an even better geographical dealer coverage.”
“In 2000 we had 206 dealers in total across Europe, 71 of which were exclusive
Lexus dealers. By the end of 2001, we will have 271 dealerships and 137 will be
Lexus exclusives” says Edmondson. “In terms of the Lexus Centres, the challenge
is to ‘Deliver the finest automotive experience in Europe’. Our expansion allows
Lexus to offer better than ever, the standards of accessibility and service that our
customers require."

The new Lexus is300 sedan builds on the attributes that have made the
Lexus is200 so popular in Europe. is200 is aimed at drivers of premium cars
and sporty compacts, many of whom once enjoyed the agility, precision and
character of “hot hatchback” models. Today they still maintain a passion for
driving, but are disappointed by the driving experience of their executive cars
and want more personality and character.
From its launch at the beginning of 1999, the Lexus is200 has successfully
challenged the very best European compact sedans in one of the most
competitive marketplaces in the industry. Last year over 13,000 customers
across Europe enjoyed the unique and exciting driving experience that is
delivered by their new is200.
The philosophy behind the IS range was created by the car’s chief engineer
Mr Nobuaki Katayama. A former racing driver, he developed his design
rationale for Toyota’s successful motorsport division during World Rally
Championship and Le Mans programmes.
Katayama identified that while most luxury sedans are easy to drive, few were
fun. He set out to make the driver feel more involved, more in control and to
bring back the enjoyment of driving. Katayama believes that the is300 sedan
is the logical extension of the original is200 concept.
“The IS range has a very strong identity” said Mr. Katayama. “The car needs to
be different - and it needs to express the personality of the confident, independent
individuals who will drive it. The new model is an extension and a growth of the
strong points of the original is200. The 3-litre engine gives increased power and
torque to a car regarded as one of the best handling in its class.”
“We have a car that is true to Lexus brand values - high quality, high specification
and offering genuine value for money” says Mr Katayama. “I believe we have
created a truly world class compact sports sedan, capable of attracting our target
customers.”
Lexus
9
Distinctive exterior styling continued
The bold and distinctive styling of the Lexus continues largely unchanged for
both the is200 and the new is300. Attention to detail is a critical element in
Lexus design. It reflects Lexus values and Lexus quality - but in a compact
sports body with the minimum of unnecessary overhangs front and rear.
The result is an intriguing balance of high performance and modern technology.
Specific visual elements which create the intangible Lexus look are the strong
wheel arch flares, the low body line and the modern clear glass lamps, both
front and rear, although smoke tinted rear lenses are now also available to
complement darker paint colours.
The familiar Lexus grille which now features three horizontal bars, is a
distinctive feature of the frontal styling of all models in the IS range. It is
combined with angled headlamps, low slung air-dam and built-in fog lamps
to add to the sports effect. The Lexus symbol dominates and is repeated on
the boot lid and the centre of the steering wheel boss.
The sharply wedged silhouette of the Lexus IS in side view emphasises the
sporty nature of the car. It clearly marks the Lexus out as quite unlike any
other compact sports sedan on the road. The massive 17-inch, alloy wheels
give the car visual weight while the bulging bonnet, raked A-pillar and forward
slant to the C-pillar create a sense of urgency.
Lexus is200 is more compact than class rivals with an overall length of
4400mm, width of 1725mm and height of 1410mm. But the strong horizontal
lines and short front and rear overhangs give the body a solid mass feeling.
The short body overhangs are more than just styling devices, of course. They
help contribute to the car's exceptional balance by reducing yawing moment
of inertia. They also allowed designers to create a more spacious interior with
excellent length, width and head room for all passengers.
Interior form and function combined
The Lexus IS interior styling reflects the distinctive style of the exterior. It is
sporty but spacious and has been subtly upgraded by the use of ‘soft-touch’
materials on the dashboard surface. The aim was to ensure the fun-to-drive
feel, but driver and passengers alike will equally appreciate the seats’ comfort
and the light and roomy cabin.
10
Figure hugging sports seats; a 3-spoke, real leather steering wheel and an
excellent driving position come as standard. The seats are designed to offer
maximum driver and passenger comfort for long distance touring yet also
provide plenty of support during performance driving. Dual-hardness foam is
used in the seat cushion with a softer base cushion, which combines support
in sporty driving and moderate stiffness of the side parts.
The sports seats are finished as standard equipment in a fabric design,
combining a shiny vertical thread and a soft braid to create a fine, detailed
design. The seats are also available with an optional leather and suede-like
covering in either black or ivory. A full leather option is now also available.
Dominating the instrument panel is the innovative chronograph style
speedometer and tachometer cluster, the graphics of which have been subtly
altered to further enhance their style and ease of reading. Minor gauges within
the combined cluster include an instantaneous fuel consumption reading,
engine temperature, battery indicator, fuel gauge and a gear-shift indicator.
A full climate control air conditioning system is standard equipment on all
models. Remote control central double locking, electric power windows all
round, with one-touch control and jam-protection for the driver's side are
standard equipment. So are heated, electrically folding exterior mirrors, front
fog lamps, illuminated vanity mirrors and a passenger seat belt warning.
The 6-speaker audio system is fully integrated into the sweeping centre
console for easy access and includes an in-dash 6-disc CD changer.
Controls are grouped around the driver to create a 'cockpit' with all essential
items easily to hand. The top surfaces of the dashboard are finished in a new
‘soft touch’ material which will enhance all the latest models in the IS range
and is complemented by either a black/ivory finish or a completely black finish
on the dashboard, which is hi-tech and sporty in style. It is a theme carried
over to the door trim.
Lexus
11
World-leading powertrain performance and refinement
Of course, inside as much as out, every model in the IS range reflects the quality
and integrity that makes it a Lexus. The truly dominant feature of any member of
the IS series is the driving experience - and at its heart is the powertrain.
Extending the capacity of its straight 6, Variable Valve Timing - intelligent
(VVT-i) engine from 2 litres to 3 for the is300, boosts power from 155 DIN hp to
214 DIN hp and maximum torque from 195 to 289Nm. Matched to the
legendary IS chassis, the Lexus is300 emphatically regains for enthusiastic
drivers, the feeling that they are in control.
While the larger engine of the Lexus is300 increases the car’s weight from
1390 to 1495kg, its horsepower is translated into significant performance
gains. 0-100km/h acceleration is achieved in around 8 seconds, compared
with 9.5 for the 2-litre M/T car, 11.2 for the A/T. Yet the combined fuel
consumption is set at a competitive 10.9 l/100km.
Equally important is the fact that thanks to the natural characteristics of the
straight 6 and the VVT-i valve timing, torque is particularly good at low
engine speeds. More than 250Nm is available from 2000 rpm to the rev limit
of 6000 rpm, giving smooth linear acceleration through the gears and rapid
throttle response for safe overtaking and maximum driver enjoyment.
Driver control on the Lexus is300 is further enhanced by the standard use of
a 5-speed automatic transmission with an ‘E-shift’ push-button gear-change
system. With the floor shift lever engaged in the ‘M’ position, buttons mounted
on the steering wheel allow the driver to manually change gear, without moving
their hands from the steering wheel, with a smoother shift than a manual and
greater control than a regular automatic.
12
Precision handling
Sophisticated multi-link double wishbone suspension is fitted at the front
and rear of all IS models to enable the best possible balance between optimum
steering response, ride comfort and precision handling. The front engined,
rear-wheel drive configuration was likewise chosen to provide the best possible
levels of control and driver enjoyment.
This is enhanced by optimum front to rear weight distribution, achieved by
reducing front and rear overhangs and moving heavy items closer to the centre
of the car. Large diameter front and rear brake discs, ventilated at the front,
allow stopping distances, with either hot or cold discs to be among the best
in the class, to emphasise the car’s role as a performance leader in all
aspects of high speed driving.
Performance is further enhanced with the use of a larger master cylinder
diameter to further improve brake pedal feel and the adoption of ABS with
(EBD) Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist and on the 3-litre
models, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control). This innovative system monitors the
vehicle's behaviour during cornering and maintains vehicle stability by using
the car’s ABS and traction control sensors to correct oversteer or understeer
before it occurs.
Active and passive safety has been a major priority in the design of the
Lexus IS range. Precise steering, positive suspension and powerful brakes are
all integral parts of the safety package. Standard equipment also includes
driver and front passenger SRS airbags, plus side SRS airbags, along with
pre-tensioned front seatbelts with force limiters. Standard side curtain shield
airbags offer supplemental head protection for front passengers in side impacts.

Lexus is300 SportCross heralds new “cross-over” concept
• Lexus is300 SportCross introduces radical new
“cross-over” styling, combining dynamic performance
with 5-door versatility, to create a new segment in the
luxury car marketplace.
• Attention to weight distribution and torsional rigidity
ensures optimum handling for both Sedan and
SportCross models
• is300 SportCross combines legendary IS attributes
with boosted power and torque from 3-litre, 157kW,
straight six VVT-i engine.
• is300 SportCross adopts 5-speed automatic
transmission, with E-shift, steering wheel-mounted,
push button gearchange system.
• is300 SportCross offers almost identical performance,
ride, handling and braking as sedan, but with added space.
14
The new is300 SportCross demonstrates Lexus’ continued ability to create a
spectacular new concept in luxury and performance car design. It introduces
radical different styling, to combine the dynamic performance and handling
of the is300 saloon with 5-door versatility and practicality. It has created a
new model that builds on traditional Lexus values, yet has once again created
a new segment in the marketplace.
While sharing the powertrain and front-end architecture of the is300 saloon,
the SportCross pays careful attention to structural rigidity and weight
distribution, including the use of an aluminium tailgate, to ensure that it
handles as well as the best sports saloons. Clever detailing enhances the
exciting styling and the distinctive, nimble, cross-over silhouette.
Clever interior design ensures that while having a rear profile similar to a
sleek coupé, the is300 SportCross can accommodate over 280 litres of
luggage under its parcel cover with rear seats upright. A further 96 litres of
space is available in additional storage boxes, while with seats folded items
over 2.6m long can be carried.
“The cross-over concept behind the is300 SportCross creates a brand new proportion
to the vehicle” says Chief Engineer Katayama. “This is no boring station wagon,
nor a Liftback model as we have had in the past. The SportCross is a new generation
vehicle; cool and individual.”
“Our aim was to make the is300 SportCross as good to drive as the is200 and
is300 Sedan” says Mr Katayama. “It has almost the same performance. Its handling sharpness and stability is almost identical, its acceleration is similar, as is the
way that it brakes. The SportCross has the advantage of 5-door versatility, with
folding seats and active space in the rear, compared with a sedan. SportCross
has the sort of versatility that you might associate with a SUV, but SportCross
isn’t dull and heavy. It has the sort of refinement and comfort you would
associate with a Lexus, but this is much more than a luxury sedan. It has
fantastic driving comfort.”
Lexus
15
Distinctive, eye-catching and efficient styling
The Lexus is300 SportCross shares the same floorpan and dimensions as the
is200 and is300 four-door sedans, with an overall length of 4505 mm and
2670mm wheelbase. Although both models share similar front-end styling, a
reprofiled front bumper exclusive to the SportCross gives the model a more
sporting and wider, more robust appearance.
The sharply wedged silhouette commences with a powerful bulging bonnet
line dipping sharply down towards the grille, emphasising the dynamic overall
shape and significantly improving air flow over the body. The familiar Lexus
grille, now features three horizontal bars, now a distinctive feature of the
frontal styling of all models in the IS range. It is combined with angled
headlamps, low slung air-dam and built-in fog lamps to add to the sports effect.
Strong wheel arches, a low body line and the modern, clear glass lamps front
and rear contain further Lexus styling cues. The massive 17-inch, alloy wheels
give the car visual weight while the bulging bonnet, raked A-pillar and forward
slant to the C-pillar create a sense of urgency.
While the main body panels are identical as far back as the rear doors, from
the C-post back, the is300 SportCross is all-new; with a unique coupe-like
outline. This further enhanced by an increase in rear tyre size from 215/45-17
to 225/45-17 and on dark-coloured cars, in common with all latest Lexus IS
models, by the use of smoke-tinted covers over the rear combination lamps
which carry the characteristic Lexus circular structural motif.
“We aimed to create a new, nimble silhouette, similar to a coupe, yet keeping the
sedan’s characteristics” explains Katayama. “From the side, it has quite a light
silhouette, thanks to the wedged incisive lower part, as well as a compact cabin
with an enhanced slant of the rear window. The compact and light cabin and
surrounding rear fender line give a very wide, stable and robust look.”
The beauty of the Lexus SportCross exterior is much more than skin deep.
Subtle aerodynamic aids allow the achievement of an exceptionally low
co-efficient of drag (CD) of 0.30 for improved fuel consumption at speed and
also actively utilise the airflow to contribute both to straightline stability and
during high-speed cornering.
A key to this is careful control both of underbody and underbonnet
aerodynamics. Underfloor components are carefully shaped to allow the
cleanest possible underbody airflow, assisted by tyre fairings fitted just
ahead of the front and rear wheels, which control airflow around the tyres.
16
Further airflow enhancements include the rounding of the front bumper
bottom and engine cover lip on the SportCross, which result in both
smoother airflow and reduced drag. The new grille design fitted to all new IS
models also features a dramatically reduced aperture to further control
underbonnet airflow. While the grille itself remains the same size, 80% of its
openings are now sealed to reduce turbulence and drag.
Interior architecture combines emotion and practicality
The Lexus is300 SportCross interior styling reflects the distinctive style of the
exterior. It is sporty but spacious. The aim of the development concept, known
as ‘Heat in Cool’ was to ensure the fun-to-drive feel, but driver and passengers
alike will appreciate the seats’ comfort and the light and roomy cabin.
In the SportCross, although the instrument panel, console and trim are
shared with the Sedan, careful use of the ‘cool metal’ materials as an accent
in the rear have maintained a high performance feeling, while practical
refinements add to functionality and top quality trim maintains the Lexus
expectation of luxury.
The rear seats are designed to fold in a 60/40% split to further enhance load
carrying capacity. This allows up to three people to be carried while extending
the length of the available load space to 1670mm. The front passenger seat
back can also be folded forward, allowing it to be used as a table when parked
and extending the available load length to an astonishing 2600mm.
A flat deck board that creates an almost level area across the rear load
compartment, luggage box and rear deck area, is available as an option.
The board made of lightweight resin, can be aligned at two levels.
At the upper level, the deck becomes fully flat; at the lower larger luggage
can be stowed.
To allow three passengers to be safely carried in the back of the SportCross,
full lap and diagonal harness are provided for all passengers, with the centre
seat belt retractor built into the roof, to allow for optimum convenience.
When two rear seat passengers are being carried, a central armrest, similar to
the sedan, can be deployed. Both the left and right side rear seats, like the
sedan, comply with ISO-FIX child seat requirements.
The aluminium rear door of the SportCross, in addition to aiding optimum
weight distribution, also enhances the ‘feel’ of a true luxury car. Weighing
5.6kg less than an equivalent steel hatch, the aluminium door contributes to
significantly lower opening forces and a better feeling on closing.
Lexus
17
World-Leading powertrain performance and refinement
Important as styling and interior appointments, the truly dominant feature of
any member of the IS series is the driving experience - and at its heart is the
powertrain.
"The 3-litre engine brings exceptional power to a car regarded as one of the best
handling in its class" says Chief Engineer Katayama. "The is200 has been
praised for its combination of engine response and refinement. The new models
are an extension and a growth of that car’s success."
Extending the capacity of its classic DOHC, straight six, Variable Valve
Timing - intelligent (VVT-i) engine from 2-litres to 3 for the is300, boosts
power from 155 DIN hp to 214 DIN hp and maximum torque from 195 to
289Nm. Matched to the legendary IS chassis, the Lexus is300 SportCross
emphatically regains for enthusiastic drivers, the feeling that the driver, not
the electronics system, is in control. While the larger engine of the Lexus
is300 SportCross increases the car’s weight from 1390 to 1495kg, its
horsepower is translated into significant performance gains. 0-100km/h
acceleration is achieved in around 8 seconds, compared with 9.5 for the
2-litre car, yet the combined fuel consumption remains at a highly
reasonable 11.2 l/100km.
Equally important is the fact that thanks to the natural characteristics of the
straight six and the VVT-i valve timing, the torque curve remains linear for all
road driving conditions. More than 250Nm is available from 2,000 rpm to
the rev limit of 6000 rpm, giving smooth linear acceleration through the
gears and rapid throttle response for safe overtaking and maximum driver
enjoyment.
The is300 is an intelligent engine which ensures that a high level of performance
is balanced by low emissions and low noise. ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction
System) has been adopted to improve the engine’s performance in low to
mid-speed ranges, while a ‘long tail pipe construction’, which effectively
allows the exhaust to double back on itself inside the main muffler, reduces
low frequency boom from the tailpipe.
Driver control on the Lexus is300 is further enhanced by the use of a new 5-speed
automatic transmission with an ‘E-shift’ push-button gearchange system.
18
If the car is driven in fully automatic mode, the system has adopted the 5
Super ECT (Electronic Controlled Transmission) system to effect fully
integrated control of the engine and transmission. This allows smoother
gearchange characteristics and better fuel economy. This is further enhanced
by the transfer of the transmission oil cooler from the radiator to a unit
mounted directly on the engine. The new unit allows the engine coolant to
more rapidly heat the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) during engine
warm-up, which in turn allows more rapid transmission lock-up control to be
achieved, to attain greater fuel economy. In addition, because the ATF is
more stable than conventional systems at high temperatures, friction loss in
the transmission has been reduced, allowing greater operating efficiency for
both economy and performance.
Optimum weight distribution assures precise handling
Praised from the outset for turn-in responses and out-of-corner traction
among the best in any class, the front engine, rear-wheel drive configuration
of the IS range provides the best possible levels of control and driver
enjoyment. Sophisticated multi-link double wishbone suspension is fitted
front and rear to all IS models to enable the best possible balance between
optimum steering response, ride comfort and precision handling.
This is enhanced by optimum front to rear weight distribution, achieved by
reducing front and rear overhangs to a minimum and moving heavy items
inside the car’s wheelbase. Careful design of the rear of the SportCross
ensures that both the torsional rigidity and weight distribution remain the
same as the Sedan – a unique attribute in any five-door car.
Large diameter front and rear brake discs, ventilated at the front, allow
stopping distances, with either hot or cold discs to be among the best in the
class, to emphasise the car’s role as a performance leader in all aspects of
high speed driving.
Performance is further enhanced by the use of a larger master cylinder
diameter to further improve brake pedal feel and the adoption of ABS with
EBD electronic brake force distribution, Brake Assist and VSC (Vehicle Stability
Control). This innovative system monitors the vehicle's behaviour during
cornering and maintains vehicle stability by using the car’s ABS and traction
control sensors to correct oversteer or understeer before it occurs.
Lexus
19
Precise steering, positive suspension and powerful brakes are all integral
parts of the safety package. Standard equipment also includes pre-tensioned
front seatbelts with force limiters, along with driver and front passenger SRS
airbags, plus side curtain shield SRS airbags.
The IS300 SportCross in Europe
“From its launch, the Lexus is200 added a new dimension to the Lexus brand, it
brought passion and emotion to the brand and was another innovative product
which redefined the way people look at Lexus” says Kirk Edmondson, Deputy
General Manager of Lexus Division in Europe.
“The is300 SportCross is another example of the innovation which makes Lexus
one of the most exciting brands in Europe. As with the original is, the rx300, the
gs before, the ls430 last year and the flagship sc430 this year, SportCross is
redefining its area of the marketplace and adding another new dimension to the
family of models which makes up Lexus."
“The product is delivering” says Edmondson. “The cars have been accepted,
awareness is gaining, we are now seeking something unique for the Lexus brand.
Passion. Products like SportCross – are not going the obvious way. Love it or
hate it – it is unique.”
“The SportCross is everything the Lexus IS sedan is, but with more room” says
Edmondson. “There is no compromise on driving capability. Traditionally when
you create a wagon, torsional rigidity and hence handling, is compromised – not
with the SportCross!”

gs430 • gs300
Lexus gs430 / gs300 - a driver’s car of the
highest dimension
• gs430 combines legendary Lexus refinement and
muscular 4.3 litre, 32-valve, V8 engine with intelligent
Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) and 5-speed automatic
transmission.
• gs300 features straight six, 3-litre engine with (VVT-i)
and E-shift, 5-speed automatic transmission with
steering wheel-operated gear selection.
• Safety features include ABS, Vehicle Stability Control,
Brake Assist and SRS side curtain shield airbag system.
26
The Lexus gs430 and gs300 offer what is truly a driver’s car of the highest
dimension. The GS range combines compact, distinctive styling with
outstanding driving dynamics and performance, along with the refinement
and luxury for which the Lexus brand is renowned. The gs430 shares with
gs300 the exciting styling which defines the dynamic high-performance
saloon and both models also share some of the most sophisticated automotive
technology currently available.
The classical combination of front engine, rear wheel-drive chassis and the
customary levels of Lexus refinement remain unchanged. However the
enhanced powertrain of the Lexus gs430 raises the driving experience
to new levels.
The Lexus gs430 is powered by a 4.3-litre, V-8 engine also utilised in the
Lexus ls430. The engine features 32 valves, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing intelligent), ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System) and ETCS-i (Electronic
Throttle Control System - intelligent), developing 283 DIN hp (208 kW) at
5600rpm and a maximum torque of 417Nm at 3500 rpm.
The Lexus gs300 is powered by a 3-litre, six cylinder engine utilising 24
valves, twin overhead camshafts and Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS)
to develop 219 DIN hp (161kW) at 5800rpm and a maximum torque of
294Nm at just 3800rpm.
With potential top speed of 250km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of
just 6.3 seconds in the gs430 (230 km/h) and 8.2 seconds for gs300, it is
sufficient to humble many sports cars, but the big difference is in the refinement
and performance of both GS models at all engine speeds.
Both models use Lexus engine management systems which are among the
most sophisticated available, controlling fuel injection and ignition timing to
thousands of a second. Combined with intelligent Variable Valve Timing
(VVT-i), it gives remarkable efficiency, low exhaust emissions and low fuel
consumption. It also ensures unrivalled tractability and smoothness.
Both engines are complemented by a Super ECT (Electronically Controlled
Transmission) 5 speed, intelligent automatic gearbox which can adapt its
gear shift pattern to suit driving style and road conditions. The transmission is
also linked to the computerised engine management system, to momentarily
reduce torque for even smoother gear changes. A similar transmission is
used on both gs430 and gs300 models, with slight changes in internal
construction to suit the output characteristics of the different models.
Lexus
27
The gs300 is also available with E-shift, which has transmission shift controls
located on the steering wheel. With the floor shift lever engaged in the ‘M’
position, this allows drivers to manually change gear without moving their
hands from the steering wheel.
Sophisticated suspension for driving pleasure and safety
Complementing the classical front-engine rear-wheel drive configuration for
maximum driving pleasure, the carefully tuned double wishbone suspension
system features anti-dive and anti-squat geometry to ensure the best balance
of comfort and control, matched to speed-sensitive, rack and pinion power
steering. Controllability is further enhanced by the use of low-pressure,
nitrogen gas-filled shock absorbers and a thicker, reshaped front stabiliser bar.
Driver control is enhanced by traction control, a multi-channel anti-lock
braking system (ABS) for the car’s 4-wheel disc brakes and Vehicle Stability
Control (VSC) system. This innovative system monitors the vehicle's behaviour
during cornering and maintains vehicle stability by using the cars ABS, traction
control and other sensors to correct oversteer or understeer before it occurs.
A further significant safety enhancement is the use of Brake Assist, which
interprets a quick push of the brake pedal as emergency braking and
supplements the braking power applied to maximise braking performance
in conjunction with ABS.
Smoothly sculpted, sporting exterior
A key feature of the Lexus GS range is the sporting stance created by its
external styling. The profile is based on a simple geometric ellipse which is
then given a functional aerodynamic treatment to create what the designers
referred to as an "aero-ellipse" shape. This aero-ellipse theme recurs
throughout the design and echoes are to be found in the tinted glass
covering the headlamps, the rear light clusters and the window contours.
Extensive use is made of high-tensile steel in the body structure to reduce
weight and further enhance efficiency. The body was also carefully designed
to maximise the size of impact-absorbing crumple zones in the front and rear
as well as incorporating substantial side impact protection bars in the doors.
28
These enhance the safety offered by safety control of front and side airbags
for the driver and front seat passenger and seatbelt pre-tensioners with forcelimiter. SRS side curtain shield airbags are now fitted as standard in all GS
models. Housed in the front pillars and roof side sections, they inflate at
the same time as the seat mounted SRS side airbags to cover the front side
window area.
Interior innovation and elegance
Both front seats have electric power adjustment and variable lumbar support
which combine with electrical multi-adjustable positioning of the leatherbound steering wheel to create the perfect driving position. The rear seat can
accommodate three people in comfort, with a full 3-point seat belt and headrest provided for the centre passenger.
Standard equipment includes cruise control, central locking and one-touch
electrical operation of the windows and sunroof, while the standard climate
control system provides dual zone temperature control for the left and right
sides of the car. It also automatically recirculates airflow when a pollution
sensor detects traffic fumes outside the car and now additionally features a
deodorising function, which uses a charcoal filter to remove any exhaust gas
odours entering the car.
The optional central multi-display, utilises a 7 inch-wide LCD (liquid crystal
display) screen with an infra-red, touch-sensitive panel to offer improved ease
of use. The Lexus Navigator, GPS satellite navigation system has been further
enhanced by DVD (digital versatile disc) storage.
The GS’s audio system is purpose-designed for the car and features a fully
integrated dashboard unit including radio, Dolby® cassette player and a
6-disc CD autochanger is located in the glove box. These feed an acoustically
engineered 7-speaker installation for optimum audio quality.

ls430
Lexus ls430 - redefines automotive perfection
• ls430 excels in every area of legendary Lexus perfection
with some of the most sophisticated automotive
technology available.
• 4.3-litre, 32-valve, V8 engine with intelligent Variable Valve
Timing (VVT-i) offers increased performance and ultra low
emissions with similar fuel consumption.
• Subtly larger, with quieter, more spacious and more
stylish interior. Yet coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.25,
the lowest in class.
• Redesigned suspension for greater stability, response
and handling. Yet an even smoother quieter ride.
• Greater range of options for more individuality, including
“world’s most exclusive car audio system”.
34
With the introduction to Europe in 2000 of the all-new Lexus ls430,
Lexus again redefined the automobile market's expectation of luxury cars.
A decade previously, the first generation Lexus established new benchmarks
for performance, quality, quiet ride and luxury content - and the model
remained a world-leader.
While retaining the “presence” of the original ls400, the new ls430
combines a more dynamic profile with increased efficiency. To increase
interior room in the ls430, Lexus lengthened the wheelbase by 75 mm with
an overall length of 5005 mm. The overall height was also raised to gain
more interior space, yet painstaking attention to detail has allowed Lexus
to achieve the impressive coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.25.
Refining the art of high-performance
The first-generation Lexus ls400 was the original “whispering giant” when
it joined the premium luxury segment more than 10 years ago, offering
unheard of levels of refinement, efficiency and quietness. The new quad-cam,
32 valve, 4.3-litre V8 in the ls430 develops 282 DIN hp (207kW) at 5600 rpm
and 417Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. Mated to a computer-controlled
5-speed automatic transmission, it powers the Lexus flagship from
0-100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds.
This prodigious output is developed, as a result of Lexus engine management
systems which are among the most sophisticated available, controlling fuel
injection and ignition timing to thousands of a second. Combined with
intelligent Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i), the 4.3-litre V8 gives remarkable
efficiency, low exhaust emissions and low fuel consumption. It also ensures
unrivalled tractability and smoothness.
VVT-i eliminates the traditional compromise between low-end torque and
high-rpm horsepower by optimising valve overlap throughout the engine's
speed range (not just at one or two set speeds). Also utilising ACIS (Acoustic
Control Induction System) and ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System intelligent), Lexus tuned the ls430 engine to produce more torque across a
broad engine speed range, making the car feel more responsive under all
driving conditions.
The ls430 engine is complemented by a Super ECT (Electronically Controlled
Transmission) 5-speed, intelligent automatic gearbox which can adapt its
gear shift pattern to suit driving style and road conditions. The transmission
is also linked to the computerised engine management system, to momentarily
reduce torque for even less discernible gear changes.
Lexus
35
Revised suspension gives smoother ride and better driving dynamics
Improved packaging of the overall design gives a well-balanced front/rear
weight distribution of 53/47% and a tighter turning radius of 5.2m for easier
manoeuvring. New front and rear suspension systems are designed to offer
an exceptionally flat ride and straight line stability under even the most
adverse road conditions. The aluminium-intensive design utilises new bearings
and a longer wheel stroke for better ride comfort and responsiveness, while the
lower unsprung weight of the components additionally aids ride and handling.
In addition, electronically modulated air suspension, is available as an
option on the Lexus ls430. The system is the first in the world to utilise the
non-linear H00 control method, to control the damping of the air suspension
and realise world-leading stability and ride quality. It has been 11 years since
the introduction of the first air suspension to a Lexus model.
The system maintains vehicle ride height at a specified level regardless of the
number of passengers or load level. The height can be raised 20mm higher
than the normal position for unpaved roads and is automatically lowered at
high speeds to improve stability and aerodynamic properties. This generates
a reduction in the coefficient of drag (Cd) from 0.26 to 0.25, the lowest of
any car in the segment.
The highest standards of interior style and content
The large and comfortable interior space of the new Lexus ls430 has been
designed to provide a special combination of ergonomics and emotion.
The interior is designed for greater space, comfort and luxury, taking maximum
advantage of the newly-developed packaging. High-quality wood-grain panelling,
featuring walnut and birds-eye grain, is extensively used on panel trims and
door cappings, with the choice of genuinely fine materials and the precise fit
and finish emphasising Lexus craftsmanship.
The sculpted trim flows into the dash, maintaining the feeling of integrity
and quality, with instrument clusters carefully designed to complement the
overall luxurious atmosphere. The Lexus ls430 maintains the traditional
ergonomic layout of analogue-type instrumentation for ease of use, the
optitron combination instrument panel located closer to the driver’s line
of sight and featuring LED figures and red LED indicator needles on a
low-reflection, upwardly curved, smoked acrylic face. In addition to
speedometer and tachometer, the larger multi-information display also
includes items such as dual trip odometers, low fuel warning and remaining
cruising range information.
36
All Lexus ls430’s offer full leather trim as standard, with a further option
of ‘semi-aniline’ leather. This special leather, offered for the first time by
Lexus, takes significantly longer in the milling process and is much softer
than regular leather.
Power adjustment, with pre-set memory functions are available as an option
to tailor the rear compartment to suit individual postures. When the doors
are opened, an auto-return function, returns the seats to the previous
position. Further comfort can be provided by specifying the optional seat
heater, or the massage function, which can gently soothe and vibro-massage
rear seat passengers.
The front seats feature power adjustment in all dimensions, with memory
functions for instantly resetting favourite positions. The power tilt and slide
mechanisms located in the seat cushions allow 240mm of fore and aft
movement, while the driver’s seat cushion can be adjusted in length by over
70mm for greater thigh support. Additional adjustments for the front seats
include dual lumbar controls and the automatic adjustment of power
headrests with seat sliding, to offer optimum comfort and protection.
A further refinement is the option of Climate Control seats for the driver and
front-seat passenger. This utilises seat-mounted blowers to direct cool air
through the seat upholstery when specified by dashboard control.
Alternatively, fast-acting heating elements beneath the upholstery can provide
warmth on demand.
The steering wheel also features controls for the audio system, which
includes as standard, a LW/MW/FM radio data system, cassette and an
in-dash, single-feed 6-disc CD changer, feeding a 7-speaker system (9-speaker
system is optional). The new CD changer location allows for a larger dual
glove box, and expanded interior storage includes compartments in the
centre console and under the front seats.
The Mark Levinson audio system features a 440W power amplifier and seven
custom-designed Mark Levinson speakers, linked to an AM/FM radio system,
cassette and CD player with 6-CD auto changer.
Lexus
37
The Lexus ls430 features as standard one of the most sophisticated climate
control systems ever fitted to a production vehicle, it features temperature
and sun-sensing articulating air registers. If for example, sunlight is concentrated
on one side of the car, the registers will automatically deliver more cooling
air to that side.
The climate control, along with car audio and navigation functions are
controlled by a central multi-display, utilising a 7 inch-wide LCD (liquid crystal
display) screen with an infra-red, touch-sensitive panel to offer improved
ease of use.
The Lexus Navigator, GPS satellite navigation system has been further
enhanced from versions previously used in the ls400, by upgrading from
the previous CD (compact disc) to DVD (digital versatile disc) storage. The
DVD, which uses a smaller laser beam diameter is able to record and play
back approximately 7.5 times the volume of data.
This allows for example, the storage of the entire European road system
on a single DVD, removing the need to change discs in the system for
long-distance travel. The Lexus Navigator system can even highlight points of
interest, search for a house number or find petrol stations, in addition to
showing the car’s exact position at any time on the dashboard screen and
guiding its occupants with voice instructions to any destination of their choice.

sc430
Lexus sc430 - a new icon for the Lexus brand
• New icon for Lexus range incorporates some of the most
sophisticated automotive technology available, in a
compact, stylish and avant-garde shape.
• Retractable hard top combines coupe and cabriolet in one
state of the art concept.
• Careful airflow management ensures highest levels of
high-speed, top down comfort and stability.
• Exhilarating driving experience guaranteed by powerful
286 DIN hp, 4.3 litre, 32-valve V8 engine with Variable

• Driver satisfaction, handling and safety enhanced by
world-leading structural integrity, plus ABS, Electronic
Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRC),
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Brake Assist (BA) and
SRS airbags.
42
The new Lexus sc430 Sport, the first-ever cabriolet model from the marque,
is already a sell-out success following its launch to rave reviews in both
Europe and the USA.
The new sc430 was designed from the outset to be the world’s finest
all-round luxury cabriolet, with an integrated all-metal retractable roof offering
the “best of both worlds”, combining open-air driving pleasure with Lexus
standards of comfort and refinement. sc430 also combines the highest levels
of performance and world-leading refinement and efficiency from its 286
DIN hp, 4.3-litre V8 engine and five-speed automatic transmission.
Key design elements
“We were determined to make the sc430 the ‘Jewel of Lexus’, the most prestigious
and exciting Lexus yet made” says Chief Engineer Nakagawa. “It will be the
jewel in Lexus dealerships around the world, with an exquisite beauty, like a
precious stone. The envy of all who see it.”
The all-weather, metal cabriolet roof, presented a number of engineering
challenges, but Nakagawa felt it was vital to apply the latest technology to
open-air cruising. He jokingly calls this philosophy “Open-mindedness”.
“In the coming century, the need to correspond to changes in the environment
and safety will greatly change the automobile, but it is important that with these
changes, we do not forget the essential joy and emotions experienced in driving”
says Nakagawa. “We believe, that in response to this new era, that we had to
develop a luxury vehicle in an entirely personalised, open-minded way, in which
the feeling of enjoying the open air can be experienced.”
With a single touch of a button on the instrument panel, the metal top is
electronically activated, folding into the front of the luggage compartment to
transform the coupe into a cabriolet in about 25 seconds. Safety is ensured
as the power hard-top responds only as long as the button is pressed. If the
hand is removed it automatically stops. A lamp indicates when the roof is
being activated and a buzzer also sounds to indicate the start and end of
roof operations.
Lexus
43
When the roof is down, it disappears totally into the rear bodywork, aided
by the ingenious movement of the roof compartment door and a 4-sectional
package tray. On the move with the roof down, the sc430 continues to maintain
the customary standards of Lexus refinement and comfort, thanks to the use
of computer generated “wind-wrap” analysis to carefully control the airflow
around the passenger compartment. An air deflector placed between the rear
seat headrests assists this and further ensures comfort during high-speed,
roof-down cruising.
In addition to the manufacturer's own wind tunnel, the Maibara wind tunnel
also used for the development of the Shinkansen Bullet Train, was utilised
because of its very low background noise which allowed Lexus to concentrate
on the reduction of wind noise as much as possible.
The sc430 also features one of the world’s most advanced climate control
systems that allows occupants to enjoy more top-down driving time than
conventional cabriolets. The system adjusts airflow and temperature
automatically, differentiating between top-up and top-down driving needs.
The airconditioning system features two new lap jets which ensures a perfect
temperature at all times. For open cruising in low temeratures, the lap jets
that are located on the centre console blow warm air into the lower section of
the cabin, to keep the legs and laps of the occupants warm.
Superior styling
From day one of the design of sc430, Mr Nakagawa attached equal importance
to both the interior and exterior styling:
Lexus designers from Europe and Japan worked together to create the design,
inspired by a location renowned for high-end luxury – the French Riviera.
Products such as high-performance luxury yachts were closely scrutinised to
gain insight into truly luxurious lifestyles, reflected in both the avant-garde
exterior and the sophisticated interior styling of the sc430.
“Once the exterior design was completed, I asked my styling team to pay special
attention to the interior” said Nakagawa. “When the top is down, the interior is
highly visible so I wanted the luxurious and sporty theme to continue inside the car.”
44
Designs using moulded plastics were rejected in favour of utilising natural
forms and materials such as wood and leather. As with the exterior styling,
the design team sought expertise from outside the automibile industry to
learn more about traditional craftsmanship and techniques. This included
spending time with the craftsmen at the famous Yamaha music instrument
factory to learn more about their special timber moulding techniques, used in
forming pianos, violins and guitars.
World-beating performance, ride and handling
Another of Nakagawa’s development goals was to provide class-leading
performance. The rear-wheel drive sc430 shares with the gs430 models a
286 DIN hp, aluminium, double overhead-cam, 4.3-litre V8 engine with
Variable Valve Timing - intelligent (VVT-i). The performance of this engine is
further enhanced by an exceptionally high torque capacity of 419Nm at just
3500rpm and is complemented by a Super ECT (Electronically Controlled
Transmission) 5 speed, intelligent automatic gearbox which can adapt its
gear shift pattern to suit driving style and road conditions.
This potent pairing of engine and transmission not only ensures that the
sc430 comfortably provides a class-leading performance, with a 0-100km/h
time of 6.4 seconds. Its efficiency also allows it to return a fuel consumption
of 12.0 l/100km, with sufficiently low exhaust emissions to allow correspondence
to Step IV regulations.
In order to balance power with superior handling and further ensure the
ultimate driving experience, Mr. Nakagawa and his team also created a
purpose-built high-performance platform for the sc430. While the car features
an improved version of the double wishbone independent suspension used
on the GS sedan, by designing the car as a cabriolet from the start, engineers
were able to optimise its structure to provide excellent rigidity whether the
retractable hardtop is up or down.
This structural solidity allows Lexus to attach the front and rear double
wishbone suspension directly to the floorpan, to better use the exceptional
rigidity of the body. This minimises vibration and contributes to a smooth
ride. The combination of the low centre of gravity and class-leading torsional
rigidity is also designed to deliver a unique mix of responsive handling and
smooth ride compliance over the wide range of road surfaces and driving
conditions found in Europe.
Lexus
45
Compact dimensions, maximum functionality.
“Even a sporty car needs to be somewhat functional and the sc430 is certainly
that” says Mr. Nakagawa. “I am particularly proud of using “intelligent packaging”
to allow the creation of a stylish V8 cabriolet with a length of just 4515mm, width
of 1825mm and height of 1370mm.”
Run-flat tyres are offered as an option and serve the purpose of safety and
convenience. The sc430 may continue to be driven up to a range of 160
kilometres at speeds of 90km/h with a punctured tyre. You can even continue
driving even if the tyre goes flat, thus avoiding a roadside tyre change. With
run-flat tyres there is no need for a spare, freeing up rear luggage capacity space.
The Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS), which comes as standard
regardless of whether the car is fitted with run flat tyres or not, uses pressure
sensors inside of the tyres. These sensors are equipped with antennae, which
constantly signal a receiver built inside the car. As soon this receiver discovers
a discrepancy between the actual tyre air pressure and the set value, it causes
a warning buzzer to sound and an indicator lamp in the instrument display
to light up.
Active and passive safety
The Lexus sc430 is further enhanced by a class leading combination of active
and passive safety.
At the front of the sc430, the unique headlamp design offers as standard,
projector-style HID lamps with low beams. Careful development has allowed
a 5 lux beam projection distance onto the road surface of over 100m.
Since safety is paramount at Lexus, the new sc430 takes advantage of several
advanced technologies. The cabriolet uses a braking system featuring foursensor, four-channel anti-brake system (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution (EBD), Traction Control, Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), Brake
Assist and Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS). EBD monitors all four
wheels during braking and varies brake pressure according to the load on
each wheel. Brake Assist is designed to determine whether the driver is
attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped hard enough
on the brake pedal to maximise the stopping force, it supplements the
applied braking power.
46
The VSC system monitors the vehicle's behaviour during cornering and
maintains vehicle stability by using the car’s ABS, traction control, linear G, yaw
rate and steering sensors to correct oversteer or understeer before it occurs
by limiting rear wheel spin and lightly applying differential braking on slippery
surfaces.
Passive safety is as comprehensively addressed as on every Lexus model.
A combination of driver’s airbag, a dual stage passenger seat airbag that
selects the opening speed in function of the level of impact, front side
airbags, front seat belt pretensioner and force limiters ensure the highest
possible standards of occupant protection.
Minimising noise and vibration
The biggest challenge for the engineers of any open-topped car is the
minimisation of vibration and noise. It took exceptional levels of development
to achieve Lexus standards of refinement in the sc430, with both roof up and
roof down.
The vibration was initially minimised by the provision of additional strength
in the A-pillars and rocker. Strengthening gussets were designed to ensure
the optimum rigidity at the joints between B-pillars and the upper and lower
cross members at the rear of the cabin, as well an expanded rocker section to
minimise body deformation.
This high torsional rigidity is a significant contributor to the reduction of
resonance in the 13hz range and was further dramatically enhanced by the
provision of “V-braces” at the subframe mounting points. As a result of
model analysis, the large attribution of subframe cushions was discovered.
A reduction scuttle vibration was realised by a change from conventional
mountings to hydraulic mountings.
The engine mount is tuned in such a way that the engine acts as a dynamic
damper. This significantly enhances the resonance performance of the Lexus
sc430 in the 18hz range. Careful tuning of this mounting contributes to a
significant reduction in roof header lateral vibration.
The minimisation of higher frequency wind and road noise was also a priority,
with the aim of achieving the same performance as a closed-body car in
high-speed cruising on a motorway. Wind tunnel examinations using
calculation and scale models were repeated right from the ideas stage of
the design to achieve the highest levels of airflow management.

Interior appointments
The sc430’s stylish interior offers a multitude of convenience features.
Easy-to-read analogue gauges, an optional navigation system, a premium
audio system which can be upgraded to a genuine Mark Levinson unit and
an advanced climate control that allows occupants to enjoy comfortable
open-top driving in the widest possible range of outside temperatures.
The use of real wood has even been extended to the cup holders, navigation
unit and audio control, all of which blend perfectly with the surrounding
interior styling. A choice of birds-eye or walnut match the surrounding
interior colours.
The front seats feature power adjustment in all dimensions, with memory
functions for instantly resetting favourite positions, including mirror and
steering adjustments.
48
Mark Levinson
At its inception a decade ago, Lexus introduced new standards for factoryinstalled audio systems. To raise the ante once again, just like the ls430 the
Lexus sc430 will offer an option of the ultimate in car audio, as a result of a
unique collaboration with the world’s most exclusive maker of home audio
systems, Mark Levinson.
The Mark Levinson audio system features a 440W low distortion power
amplifier and nine custom-designed Mark Levinson speakers, linked to an
LW/MW/FM radio system, cassette and CD player with 6-CD auto changer
mounted in the head unit. The steering wheel contains the controls for
essential functions of the system, and a wooden, electronically controlled
door, similar to a home audio cabinet, hides the sound system controls.
To overcome the different acoustic environments with roof up and roof
down, the sc430 ASL (Audio Sound Leveller) system automatically adjusts
the sound levels of the audio system according to when the roof is lowered
and returns to its original levels when the top is raised. This ensures that
Lexus sc430 occupants will enjoy a premium audio experience with the
top up or down.
Lexus Navigation System (Option)
The Lexus Navigation system features a DVD which is capable of storing
more data and which allows for faster access and route calculation.

rx300
Lexus rx300 - the Lexus that changed sports utility
perceptions
• Created a new shape and new direction for the Lexus
brand in Europe
• An innovative alternative to a conventional SUV or
to a luxury sedan
• Trend-setting external styling combined with luxurious
and practical interior
• Four-wheel drive versatility plus Lexus-class road
performance, ride and handling
54
At its launch the Lexus rx300 marked a new definition for the Lexus brand
in Europe, a new breed of Lexus and a new breed of sports utility vehicle.
The unique design of rx300 offers levels of driving comfort and on-road
performance in line with Lexus sedans and is aimed at satisfying the changing
tastes of luxury car buyers.
A key to the success of the Lexus rx300, is that it offers an SUV capability
without the on-road compromises often associated with all-wheel drive vehicles.
Powered by a 3-litre V6 engine, featuring VVT-i variable valve timing for
increased efficiency and flexibility, the rx300 features a passenger car-type
unibody design in contrast to the traditional ladder type chassis used by
traditional off-roaders.
This along with fully independent MacPherson strut-type suspension,
power assisted rack and pinion steering and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes,
ensures luxury car levels of agility and stability. The Lexus rx300 differs
significantly from its American stablemate, with a wide range of powertrain
and chassis refinements, developed in Europe to ensure the optimum
performance in European driving conditions. These include fine tuning the
steering and suspension to offer greater driver response and feedback, as
well as the addition of security and safety items including Brake Assist (BA).
Power with efficiency and refinement
The 3-litre, 4-cam, all aluminium offers an unrivalled combination of
performance, efficiency and low emissions.
The Lexus VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) engine optimises valve
overlap throughout the engine’s rpm range to eliminate the traditional
compromises between low-end torque and high-end horsepower. The result
is an engine that develops a class-leading 201 DIN hp (148kW) and 283Nm
of torque, yet continues to produce eighty percent of peak torque as low as
1200rpm for optimum pulling power and standing-start performance.
At the same time the VVT-i system enhances fuel economy and reduces
exhaust emissions so effectively that rx300 meets the toughest requirements
without the need for performance-sapping devices such as exhaust gas
recirculation, required by many other such vehicles.
Lexus
55
The smoothness and refinement of the V6 engine is further enhanced by
the use of the first-ever fully active engine control mount, which is controlled
directly by each combustion stroke of the engine. A solenoid-controlled
diaphragm creates pulses which are equal but opposite to the engine’s
movements to counteract vibrations.
Sophisticated drivetrain and suspension
Specifically designed to meet the needs of customers who are already used to
the standards of refinement and performance set by Lexus sedans, the rx300
drivetrain and suspension systems are well in advance of traditional ‘off-roaders’
in terms of driveability, comfort, efficiency and safety.
The Lexus rx300 features a 4-speed electronically-controlled automatic
transmission matched to a sophisticated 4-wheel drive system featuring
a viscous limited-slip centre differential. This requires no activation by the
driver in slippery conditions and automatically transfers torque when required
to the wheels which have the most traction.
The resulting levels of traction combined with the engine’s power characteristics
mean that the rx300 is capable of meeting most on- and off-road tasks without
the need for a seldom-used low-range transfer gearbox and its associated
cost, weight and maintenance implications. The result is that rx300 has an
excellent power to weight ratio, which gives on-road performance to rival
some sports sedans with a 0 -100km/h acceleration time of just 9.2 seconds
and an electronically governed maximum speed of 180 km/h.
Matching the rx300s straight-line performance is its ride, handling and
cornering ability. While the rx300 has the size and stance of a mid-sized
sports utility vehicle, it is built on a passenger car-style unibody platform
rather than the body-on-chassis design still used by many off-roaders.
To improve on its class-leading performance, the rx300 has been
comprehensively re-engineered to suit European driving styles and conditions,
which involves higher sustained speeds, harder acceleration and later braking.
The Toyota Motor Europe Technical Centre in Brussels was actively involved
fine tuning the new model with new springs, dampers and stabiliser bars,
along with a remapped power steering system to give levels of weighting,
feedback and responsiveness more appropriate to European conditions.
56
Further enhancing the dynamic handling characteristics, are the use of
electronic traction control (TRC), a multi-channel anti-lock braking system
(ABS), with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and a Vehicle
Stability Control (VSC) system.
Significant safety enhancements are the use of EBD, which uses the anti-lock
braking sensors to equalise front and rear brake force distribution and Brake
Assist, which interprets a quick push of the brake pedal as emergency braking
and supplements the braking power applied to maximise braking performance
in conjunction with ABS.
In addition to the active safety generated by its class-leading dynamic
responses, the Lexus rx300 also ensures similar levels of passive safety.
The rigid monocoque passenger compartment and progressively absorbent
crumple zones make a secure cage to protect occupants, with safety being
further enhanced by a head impact protection structure built into the interior
pillar trims and roof interior as well as both frontal and side-impact airbags
and front seat-belt pre-tensioning systems.
Exterior style
The rx300 breaks new ground in the Lexus range with futuristic body styling
reflecting both urban style and a sturdy outer shape with a characteristic
flowing silhouette.
Front and rear design too, combines a voluminous shape which is not inferior
to a traditional off-road vehicle, with a stylish, sporty and high-quality aspect.
The distinctive Lexus grille is integrated into the body style by a hallmark
Lexus tinted lamp extension fairing to give a clear brand identity.
The rear lamp treatment features keynote Lexus circular elements in the
compact multi-function clusters, with an inner, chromed, 3-dimensional
architecture which echoes the styling of other members of the Lexus family.
Lexus
57
Interior comfort and convenience
The interior of the rx300 has been designed to blend practicality and versatility,
with a style expected to be a trend setter for the next generation of SUVs
The dashboard design is a classic example of function and style combined.
The use of an electronically-controlled automatic transmission has allowed
the shift lever to be positioned in the centre instrument panel, liberating the
floor space between the seats.
Above the gearshift lever lie the controls for the 168-watt Nakamichi six-speaker
premium stereo system, which includes a 6-disc CD auto changer located in
the glovebox. Heading the central display is the 14.7cm (diagonal) liquid crystal
display screen which displays audio, heating, climate control and trip
computer functions.
Ahead of the driver, an integrated optitron display combines speedometer,
tachometer, fuel, temperature, mileage and warning light displays in a single,
easy to read display. The luminescent graphics provide a further sporty, yet
high-quality feel to the interior.
The Lexus luxury continues with 8-way power adjustment of the driver and
front passenger seats, which feature fold-down arm rests and a
characteristic U-shaped sewing pattern on their leather facings. The rear
seats feature headrests and can be split 60:40. Additionally they can be slid
forwards or backwards by up to 12cm to create more leg room or baggage
space as required.
“Lexus rx300 is an important model for Lexus in Europe. It is redefining the
market place, both in terms of Lexus owners and in the SUV segment” says
Kirk Edmondson, Deputy General Manager of Lexus Division in Europe.
“rx300 is an optimal vehicle, not a pure 4x4. As a result it has the consequent
high level of on-road ability, car-like driving qualities and Lexus refinement.
It has for many, provided an innovative alternative to a regular luxury
passenger car.”
