Shining in the morning light too. The sun lifts the veil of mist from the road, the contours of the new S-Class stand out in sharp relief. The upright radiator grille topped by the unmistakeable star herald in the new dawn. A new day is breaking – and with it, a new era of mobility. Fascination 3 4 5 Prepare to arrive in the future without covering a single metre of road. 6 The quickest route between two points on your agenda. “The office awaits” – a promise with a pleasant undertone. For even when it comes to the matter of work the new S-Class is an oasis. With air of a purity reminiscent of the coast or forested mountain slopes. Pollutants have to stay outside; ionisation enriches the air in the interior of the luxury saloon. You inhale freedom. Even if you currently find yourself between a handful of skyscrapers and two important appointments. 7 8 9 10 11 When can a moment not be surpassed? Or a car? Intense light showcases the immaculate trim. Richly contrasting materials blend to form harmonious surfaces. Exclusive design sparkles with optimum functionality and a predilection for detail. Your glance sweeps through the generous space and your hands rest for a few seconds on the timelessly classic leather of the seats. Before you alight, sure in the knowledge that the perfect day is simply a question of the right vehicle. 12 Nowadays revolutions are driven from the executive seat. 14 15 Equally at home with black tie or white collar. 16 The time is ripe, the way ahead beckons. Truly there could be no more fitting an opportunity in which to meet up with the future. Its 225 kW plus 20 kW (306 hp plus 27 hp) move mountains as if it were an uphill stroll. Never before was the S 400 HYBRID able to offer such outstanding ride comfort with such low fuel consumption and emissions. 17 18 Recharges its batteries while in motion – as you will do, too. 20 21 The new S-Class will always leave you in control, never on your own. The vision of autonomous driving is at your fingertips as you grip the wheel. The new S-Class uses its camera and sensor technology to capture your surroundings comprehensively and is fully alert to what it records. An intelligent suspension system processes the data gathered in an algorithm, multiplying your safety, comfort and dynamism several times over. Reflection is the better form of reaction. 22 23 Sight machine. As soon as it gets dark, the eye of the new S-Class comes to life. The full-LED headlamps go into fully automatic action and reaction, illuminating with precision the areas where they’re needed, exactly when they’re needed. You can even opt to take the shine off oncoming traffic if you want to avoid dazzling them. This gives you optimum vision in practically every driving situation – and above all, a good feeling about where you’re headed. 24 25 Where the best deals are done. 26 27 Catapulting your career. 28 29 It takes three extraordinary letters to crown a new S-Class: AMG, the fastest way to the top. High-performance technologies which have earned their spurs in motor racing are matched with systematically deployed lightweight materials. The result is a unique combination of luxury saloon and super sports car: the new S 63 AMG. As it is with the technologies, so it is with the materials: only the best, the truly special are used. Carbon-fibre, for example – a material that, thanks to its minimal weight and extreme rigidity, is extensively deployed in Formula 1 racing. Precisely fashioned and finished by hand, it gives the interior of the new S 63 AMG an air of exclusive sportiness. 30 31 Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. Look ahead. Think ahead. Welcome to the automotive future. Which arrived a long time ago as far as the new S-Class is concerned. Lay your hands on the steering wheel and all your senses will link up. The cutting-edge on-board and external sensor systems will see ahead for you, draw conclusions for you, react at lightning speed and thereby prevent accidents. Thanks to a stereo camera, powerful processors and technical assistant systems. And years of unstinting research. A further milestone from Mercedes-Benz along the path towards greater safety and comfort in road transport and a significant step towards autonomous driving. What will the future bring? The more research we do, the more perspectives that open up. That’s how it is with visions. There comes a time when you need a new one. Of and for the future. 32 Just a second! 33 Everyone has a view on whether it’s possible to predict what’s coming. Impossible, many would say. A challenge, is what our R&D people reply. But actually, our engineers were not happy with just seeing what’s about to happen: they had the crazy idea of wanting to influence the future through actions in the present, for in this way they could help to prevent accidents ever happening. You’ve surely been there before: you are concentrating on the road ahead, when suddenly a shadow catches the corner of your eye... In those few critical seconds you’re best off benefitting from the results of many years of research. We have developed technologies that allow the vehicle to keep an eye on everything around it. It can see things coming that we can at best only guess at – for example, by calculating where moving objects will move to, and when. Using a stereo camera system that can view things three-dimensionally, in other words spatially. Just like a human can. But can then compute this data so quickly that it is analysed in real time, and can forecast, for example, the future position of a cyclist. That is impossible for a human and unique in a car – i.e. typically S-Class. 34 Masterpiece of chassis engineering. 35 What do you call something that’s ground-breaking? Something that’s prepared to leave the tried and trusted behind, to reinvent it. Knowing that the real challenge always lies ahead of one. Revolutionary? Innovative? Visionary? We call it magic – MAGIC BODY CONTROL. This newly developed chassis technology sets itself up in advance to deal with the road conditions ahead. One could almost say, it relieves the road of its pock-marks and imperfections. This view of the immediate future is achieved through a stereo camera positioned behind the rear-view mirror, which observes the road from two perspectives. The huge amounts of data created are transferred to and processed by the control unit for the chassis, in real time. With an accuracy of one to two millimetres at 120 km/h and 25 images per second. The chassis accordingly regulates the amount of oil needed in each of the separately controllable spring struts. In this way the bumps in the road can be almost completely absorbed. At a speed of 130 km/h. Even when cornering, the system always knows what lies ahead. If you’ve experienced it, you’ll want to write letters of thanks to our engineers – which you can do, on the back seat of the car, at speed, with a fountain pen. Thanks to MAGIC BODY CONTROL. 36 When you’re driving in the new S-Class, arriving is almost incidental. Both for you, and our engineers too.Their aim for every journey is to create a space which becomes yours when you move into it. In a seat that cools you or warms you as desired, and gently tilts backwards until, relaxed and stretched out in the back, you rediscover the meaning of generosity. The measure of all things, which adjusts itself to you, supports your legs and bolsters your back. From the six massage programmes available, you select 15 therapeutic minutes – relaxing you after what has been, reviving you for what’s still to be done. In an exclusive workplace that offers you all you need to make you independent. You will find the unobtrusive technologies at work here, which turn your trip into one of incomparable comfort, intuitive to operate. And when you do get out, you are not just getting out of a car, but of a space specially created for you: the new S-Class. First Class Business Class. 38 Light has never been so directed. 39 There is not much we don’t try in our quest to revolutionise every area of automotive engineering and be the first to bring new technologies to the street. So why not put light in the spotlight, and work on it until it is efficient and intelligent enough to be fit for an S-Class? And we don’t just mean that the new LED-based lighting technology must illuminate the road surface better, the light temperature must be agreeable and the lights must use up to 25 percent less energy compared to conventional headlamps. S-Class lighting must do more than that. It must interact with the various sensor and assistance systems, such as the optional Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus. With the result that if an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle ahead is detected, the area it occupies is simply blanked out in the main beam light cones of the LED headlamps. And when at a standstill, at traffic lights for example, the brake light is automatically toned down so as not to dazzle anyone behind. The more than 190 single-chip LED diodes ensure even greater comfort and safety in traffic. So, light can do a whole lot more than just be illuminating. In a Mercedes-Benz at least. The rule of the road today: you can’t have refinement without efficient technologies. Mercedes-Benz diesel and petrol engines are therefore lighter and measure out fuel extremely precisely. In this way they bring together a sense of responsibility and commitment, without compromising on driving enjoyment – no matter what drive system you opt for. 6-cylinder V-engine. The S 350 BlueTEC brings together frugality and performance in one engine. This is made possible thanks to systematic use of lightweight materials deploying aluminium parts and precise, spray-guided piezo injection. The new S-Class with a V6 engine and output of 190 kW (258 hp) as well as maximum torque of 620 Nm consumes a mere 5.5 l per 100 km. The CO2 emissions stand at only 155-146 g/km. What’s more, the BlueTEC technology significantly reduces the nitric oxide emissions from the 6-cylinder engine – almost down to the level of a petrol engine. In this way the S 350 BlueTEC already satisfies the strict requirements of the Euro 6 emissions standard. 8-cylinder V-engine. Refinement, driving pleasure and responsibility – embodied by the petrol engine with 335 kW (455 hp). Thanks to twin turbocharging and intercooling, the S 500 has huge reserves of power and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.8 seconds. The engine may give off its typical, unmistakeably sonorous and cultivated sound, but fuel consumption stays unusually low. Torque (Nm) 2000 4000 6000 Engine speed (rpm) The 8-cylinder petrol engine is powerful, refined and efficient. Output (kW) Drive system and chassis S 400 HYBRID. This particularly efficient, environmentally responsible drive system combines a 6-cylinder petrol engine with a compact electric motor. The highlight is its specially-developed lithium ion battery. It is fed in part by a kinetic energy recuperation system and is very light despite the high energy density. Environmentally responsible, comfortable and dynamic, all at the same time – that is what is expected of a drive system for the luxury class. And of course, of an environmentally friendly drive system. In the S 400 HYBRID, in addition to an enhanced 6-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor is installed which is compact, lightweight and torquey, and which is driven by a high-capacity lithium ion battery. The interaction of the engines is controlled by high-performance, intelligent electronics. If the vehicle brakes, the electric motor becomes an alternator and produces electricity for the lithium ion battery. If the vehicle stops, at traffic lights for instance, the ECO start-stop function turns the combustion engine off. To start up again, the S 400 HYBRID uses the stored kinetic energy. The current flow of energy between the two engines is displayed in the instrument cluster. A boost function can combine the power of both engines for short periods of time. That increases for a short time the already impressive agility of the luxury saloon further still. 1 The efficiency-optimised 6-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 3.5 litres. 4 2 The compact hybrid module is located between the petrol engine and the automatic transmission. 3 The powerful lithium-ion battery has a high energy density yet its dimensions are compact and it is light in weight. 3 4 The power electronics coordinate the intelligent and efficient work 5 2 6 performed by the petrol engine and electric drive system. 5 The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission ensures imperceptible switching between the power sources and acceleration without interruption 7 of tractive power. 6 Recuperative braking system: when braking, the electric motor becomes a generator and produces electrical current for the lithium ion battery. 7 Low rolling-resistance tyres for comfortable and economical motoring. 8 The energy flow and drive system battery charge level are indicated constantly on the hybrid display. 1 8 43 44 Transmission. The consumption and efficiency-optimised 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission stands out for its high level of efficiency, ultra-smooth gear changing, dynamic response and reduced noise levels. 7G-TRONIC PLUS. This 7-speed automatic transmission system combines a high level of driving comfort with driving enjoyment and efficiency. The seven forward gears provide a wide gear ratio range, but with small engine speed step-ups between the individual gears. This leads to ultra-fast gear changing with pleasantly smooth transitions. As 7G-TRONIC PLUS can skip over individual gears, multiple downshifts are possible, to give powerful spurts of speed. The driving modes “Economy”, “Sport” and “Manual” allow the style of changing – from economic to dynamic – to be selected. Using the “Manual” mode, drivers wishing to adopt a more sporty style of driving can change gear manually via the DIRECT SELECT steering wheel shift paddles – just as motorsport drivers do. DIRECT SELECT. The DIRECT SELECT gearshift system includes the DIRECT SELECT lever on the steering column, with which the transmission can be changed between the shift modes “P”, “R”, “N” and “D”. In addition to this, the gear can be selected manually via the DIRECT SELECT shift paddles. DIRECT SELECT lever on steering column. The driver can also change up or down a gear manually using the additional shift paddle. 45 46 Chassis & suspension. The new S-Class is fitted with the latest-generation, enhanced AIRMATIC suspension system as standard. The innovative MAGIC BODY CONTROL – a technological milestone, premiered in the new S-Class – is available as an alternative. AIRMATIC (standard). Working in combination with a stepless damping control system, this air suspension system ensures superlative road roar and tyre vibration characteristics and driving dynamics. The damping is adjusted on each wheel to the actual driving situation and can be set to be comfortable or sporty, as desired. Crosswind Assist (standard). In strong, gusting crosswinds, the vehicle is in danger of being thrust off course. The Crosswind Assist system can recognise this and help the driver to stay on course. Using the ESP®’s sensor system, the brakes can be actuated automatically to correct the vehicle’s direction. These braking interventions are performed on the wheels on the side of the vehicle exposed to the wind. The resulting yaw response around the vertical axis counters the crosswind disturbance. The track offset experienced by the vehicle is considerably reduced as a result. Crosswind Assist therefore increases the driver’s feeling of safety and, in particular, helps to prevent inappropriate reactions to sudden gusts of wind. MAGIC BODY CONTROL (option). This suspension system provides unparalleled comfort, as it adjusts for undulations and unevenness in the road before the car passes over them. This is made possible by the combination of the active springing of the suspension system with the ROAD SURFACE SCAN function. With the aid of a stereo camera the condition of the road surface ahead is captured in detail. From the data gleaned the system calculates in a split second the correct strategy for adjusting in advance the damping of each wheel so as to deal in the best possible way with the unevenness ahead. AIRMATIC air suspension ensures comfort and agility through its ability to raise and lower the suspension settings as required. Crosswind Assist improves handling by actively influencing the wheel forces. Drive system and chassis 47 48 Integral safety concept. We are driven by the vision of accident-free driving. Our integral safety concept takes us a step closer to achieving this. It is a comprehensive approach which paves the way for new, synergy-based technological solutions, a case in point being the “Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive” system which combines comfort and safety. As the inventor of the motor car we feel a special responsibility for road safety. Thatʼs why we became the first car manufacturer to develop an integral safety concept that seamlessly combines active and passive safety measures to provide comprehensive protection. The holistic approach is divided up into four phases and offers safety solutions for every situation. These include systems for safe driving, which help prevent hazards by providing timely alerts and assistance. Our unique PRE-SAFE® system is triggered in response to danger and activates anticipatory measures to protect the occupants. If a collision should occur despite these precautionary measures, other technologies provide the required protection. We have also considered the time immediately after an accident by developing solutions that can prevent serious injury and enable the emergency services to provide rapid assistance. A selection of these technologies for the “Safe driving”, “In the event of danger”, “In an accident” and “After an accident” phases is presented on the pages which follow. Safe driving: Driving Assistance package Plus (option). This package is made up of many safety and assistance systems, including DISTRONIC PLUS with STEER CONTROL, the PRE-SAFE® Brake with active pedestrian protection, BAS PLUS Brake Assist with Cross Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS. These Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive technologies help to take the burden off the driver, reduce the risk of accidents and improve protection for the vehicle occupants as well as other road users. DISTRONIC PLUS with STEER CONTROL and Stop & Go Pilot helps the driver to maintain a safe distance between him or herself and the vehicle in front and to stay in the middle of the lane. The Tailback Assist system therefore provides a high level of relief, particularly on long journeys and in traffic jams. In urban driving in particular, BAS PLUS Brake Assist with Cross Traffic Assist and the PRE-SAFE® Brake with active pedestrian protection can help reduce the risk of accidents at junctions, DISTRONIC PLUS with STEER CONTROL and Stop & Go Pilot takes the strain off the driver in both moving and stop-and-go traffic. Safety in stop-start traffic or involving pedestrians. Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist support the driver if he or she inadvertently drifts out of or changes lane, risking a collision with another vehicle. Through brake actuations on one side of the vehicle, they help to manoeuvre the car back into its lane, or to prevent an accident. Last not least, PRESAFE® PLUS is an enhancement to the preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, containing protection measures in the event of an impending rear impact collision. Safe driving: Night View Assist Plus (option). Only 20 percent of all traffic travels at night, yet 40 percent of fatal accidents occur during this time. Night View Assist Plus makes it possible for the driver to spot people or animals sooner in the dark. They are clearly shown up in the multifunction display in the instrument cluster. The spotlight function causes pedestrians on either side of the road who might be at risk to be drawn to the driver’s attention quicker, by flashing them four times in quick succession, which also makes the pedestrians themselves aware of the hazardous situation. The night vision screen switches itself on as standard if a risky situation has been detected. Active Blind Spot Assist monitors the areas around the vehicle, issues a warning Active Lane Keeping Assist can intervene to correct the vehicle’s direction Night View Assist Plus highlights any people it has recognised and helps the and if necessary brakes the vehicle if it changes lane. if it inadvertently changes lane. drivers to react quicker to dangers by night. 49 50 In the event of danger: PRE-SAFE® system (standard). The system can recognise critical driving situations in advance and activate measures to protect the occupants if there is a risk of an accident. This includes activating the reversible belt tensioning or the automatic closing of open windows. In the event of danger: PRE-SAFE® PLUS (option, part of the optional Driving Assistance package Plus). This enhancement to the PRE-SAFE® system can activate additional preventive measures to protect the vehicle occupants if there is a risk of a rear end collision and the vehicle is at a standstill. This includes warning the traffic behind by The PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system can mitigate the consequences of accidents. means of the rear hazard warning lights flashing at a higher frequency and locking the brakes if the driver indicates that he wishes to remain stationary. In the event of danger: BAS PLUS with Cross Traffic Assist (option). This anticipatory system can reduce the risk of rear end collisions and accidents at junctions. If the system has registered a dangerous situation and the driver activates the brakes, BAS PLUS can increase the brake pressure appropriate to the situation, so as ideally to avoid a collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian. In the event of danger: PRE-SAFE® Brake (option). The PRE-SAFE® Brake helps the driver with the traffic in front of (both moving and stationary vehicles) and behind him/her by reducing the danger when there is a risk of a rear end collision. The aim of the PRE-SAFE® Brake is to draw the attention of a driver who was unaware of the danger to the fact there is a risk of a collision occurring. PRE-SAFE® Brake gets the information on the vehicle’s surrounds from the long and close-range radar sensors installed in the vehicle. BAS PLUS with Cross Traffic Assist assists the driver with braking when it identifies a hazard to the side as well as in front of the car. Safety In an accident: PRE-SAFE® impulse (standard). Both the driver and front passenger are exposed to great stresses in a frontal collision. In the early phase of the collision, PRE-SAFE® impulse tightens the safety belts for the front seats. The front occupants are therefore moved in the opposite direction to the crash direction and pulled deeper into their seats. At the point of greatest stress the energy is reduced in a controlled manner and the belt is loosened again. This pre-acceleration and force limitation momentarily remove the occupants from the force of the crash. In this way, PRE-SAFE® impulse considerably reduces the risk of injury. In an accident: airbags (standard). The new S-Class has eight airbags in total. In addition to the impact bags, there are sidebags and windowbags for the driver and front passenger. There are also sidebags in the rear and optional beltbags for the outer rear seats. The beltbag, a type of inflatable seat belt strap, reduces the strain on the chest in a collision. If there is an accident, the beltbag strap inflates to some three times its normal width. This spreads the force impacting on the occupants over a greater area, thereby reducing the strain to the chest area. PRE-SAFE® impulse: the front seat belts can propel the front occupants away A total of eight airbags can protect you and other vehicle occupants in the from the collision direction in the early stages of impact. event of an accident. After an accident: Mercedes-Benz emergency call system (Mercedes-Benz Connect technology, part of COMAND Online). The system can send an automatic emergency call via an operational telephone connected to the vehicle as soon as the restraint system detects an accident. At the same time GPS positioning data and other information on the vehicle are transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz emergency call centre. A voice connection is then established, and the subsequent conversation can be held in the occupants’ mother tongue in nearly all cases. This makes it easier to initiate measures to save, recover or tow the vehicle to a Mercedes-Benz Service Support Point quickly. Measures after an accident. In order to reduce consequential damage and, where necessary, to support the rescue of the occupants, Mercedes-Benz has developed further measures. These include the automatic engine cut-off or the activation of the hazard warning lamps and the emergency interior lighting. The central locking also opens automatically, and crash joints between the door and the wing make it easier to open the doors after an accident. In addition Mercedes-Benz makes Guidelines for Rescue Services available; helpers can download them in different languages all over the world from the internet at www.mercedes-benz.de/rettungsleitfaden. As you can see, at Mercedes-Benz consideration has been given to safety in every situation. 51 52 Assistance systems. The new S-Class does not just influence its surroundings – it records them, with short and long-range radar, stereo and infrared cameras and ultrasound sensors working together to give all-round vision, thereby making driving safer and more relaxing. Stereo camera (option). This can capture objects and pedestrians passing in front of the car and calculate the path they will take. Intelligent algorithms evaluate the data and, for a large area of vision, can recognise and allocate in terms of space vehicles, pedestrians and different types of traffic signs and road marking that are oncoming, moving ahead or crossing the path of the car. 360° camera (option). This system allows you to park and manoeuvre, giving you an all-round near real-time view using four networked cameras. The vehicle and its surrounds can be displayed in a bird’s-eye view in the COMAND Online display; and obstacles below the level of the windows are also displayed to the driver. A stereo camera, close and long-range radars and all-round sensor systems form the basis for numerous safety and assistance systems in the new S-Class. 54 Parking package (option). Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC and a reversing camera makes finding a parallel or car park parking space and parking in it easier. If so desired, it will automatically control the vehicle in parking spaces and spares the driver the steering and braking actions. If the driver selects reverse gear, and accepts the space suggested, Active Parking Assist automatically performs the required steering movements to manoeuvre the car into the space at a speed of up to 10 km/h. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals. The parking manoeuvre is completed in a maximum of seven moves. Traffic Sign Assist (part of the optional COMAND Online system. Traffic Sign Assist is set up to be country-specific.) This assistance system can recognise speed limit and no overtaking signs as well as the signs indicating the restriction is lifted and show these in the instrument cluster and the map view of the COMAND display to inform the driver. If the vehicle turns into a street displaying a no entry sign, a visual and audible warning message is displayed/issued in the instrument cluster (wrong-way warning). LED Intelligent Light System (option). So as to give the best possible view on country roads and motorways, when turning into side roads, on bends and in fog, the low-beam headlamps of the LED Intelligent Light System adapt automatically to weather, light and driving conditions. In main beam mode, Adaptive Main Beam Assist Plus allows the road surface to be illuminated in the main, without dazzling any other road users. Part of the light cone is blanked out for oncoming vehicles or traffic ahead. But the sides of the road remain illuminated by the main beam. Adaptive Main Beam Assist Plus dims itself for road signs that reflect its The stereo camera surveys an area of up to 500 metres ahead of the car and Traffic Sign Assist can recognise speed limit signs and show the speed limit Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus always provides the best possible headlamp detects where there are parking spaces. in the display. range automatically, thereby improving visibility for the driver. Comfort light back strongly, so as to avoid dazzling the driver. In these ways the LED Intelligent Light System makes an important contribution to safe driving. This efficient technology is impressive for its low energy usage, its longevity and for its pleasant white light, which is close to the daylight spectrum. Warmth & Comfort package (option). On cold days the Warmth & Comfort package provides comforting warmth on all surfaces the driver and passengers come into contact with in the shortest possible time. Not only can With the Warmth & Comfort package, the vehicle occupants can each choose one of three heat settings. the seats be heated, but the armrests in the centre console and the doors too – and, in conjunction with the electrically adjustable rear seats, the central armrest in the rear as well. This unique feel-good experience is rounded off by the heated steering wheel. The driver, front passenger and passengers in the outer rear seats can choose one of three different heating levels at the touch of a button. The buttons are located in their door control panels. The heating switch for the steering wheel is positioned right next to it. There are controls for determining which surfaces should be heated in COMAND Online. 55 56 Comfort Multimedia systems. On the way to work or working already? Different media requirements and options have already been taken into account with the new S-Class. The new Mercedes-Benz Connect functions can be operated just as intuitively as the familiar ones. COMAND Online (standard). Navigation, phone, audio, video, internet – with the COMAND Online control and display system, the driver has these and many further functions in view and under control. Data is presented on a highresolution 31.2 cm colour display. Operation is simple and intuitive. A fast hard disc navigation system with realistic topographical map display will get you to your destination in relaxed style. In combination with an appropriate mobile phone, it is possible to call up internet pages while the car is stationary and to use Mercedes-Benz apps for POI searches, weather forecasts, internet radio and the like while the car is in motion. The integral WLAN hotspot functionality allows a notebook or tablet to be linked in. And a DVD player, radio, 10 GB storage for audio and video files and interfaces allowing external devices to be connected ensure you won’t be short of entertainment. Mercedes-Benz Connect. Numerous convenience, safety and information services make Mercedes-Benz Connect an innovative, added-value service of the future, effectively and intelligently fusing car and internet together. Customeroriented digital services keep the driver constantly connected to his or her own personal digital world, thus making every journey a convenient and efficient experience. The following features and systems form part of Mercedes-Benz Connect: COMAND Online, Live Traffic Information, the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system and WLAN hotspot functionality. Live Traffic Information (standard1). This service gives up-to-the-minute, precise traffic information to enable you to get to your destination quickly and by the best possible route, and will calculate your precise ETA. While the driver views the navigation information, the front passenger can enjoy films with superb image quality on the COMAND Online 31.2 cm display. This dual use of the display is made possible by SPLITVIEW, which can display different content independently of where the viewers are sitting, at the same time on the same display. A high-class cordless headphone set spoils the passenger with its outstanding sound, without bothering the driver at all. The passenger can use a remote control to access the entertainment of his or her choice conveniently – films on DVD, radio, the internet or even TV, in conjunction with a TV receiver. Over and above this, content from MP3 players, games consoles or the iPod® is available via the Aux-in socket. SPLITVIEW displays two different images at the same time – for the driver and front passenger – on a single screen in the centre console. Individual Entertainment in the rear (option). DVD films, the internet, video games, music – Individual Entertainment allows passengers in the rear to create their own personal entertainment programme. Two 25.4 cm displays with cordless headphones provide outstanding image and sound quality. Part of the Individual Entertainment in the rear system: the 25.4 cm displays. 59 60 Seats. Sitting in the new S-Class is not just comfortable, it can also increase your ability to keep driving well. Quite apart from individually climatised seats plus 60 possible settings from the seating area through to the steering column, there is a massage function and a special relaxation cushion for the rear seat. ENERGISING massage function (option). Six different programmes are available, including two hot relaxing massage programmes, which can relax, stimulate or mobilise you according to your wishes; and can be selected for both the front and the rear seats. “Strong” or “weak” intensity levels can be set. The speed and effect varies according to programme. Each programme lasts between 12 and 15 minutes. Climatised front and read seats (option). Thanks to active ventilation, on hot days the seat ventilation can cool the surface of the seats down quickly to a pleasant temperature. The seat heating can be switched on on cold days to provide comforting warmth. Seat ventilation and seat heating can be set at three levels independently of each other by means of a switch. Memory package (option; standard for the S 500). If there is a frequent change of driver or front passenger, the Memory package makes life particularly convenient. Up to three different positions for the front seats, steering column and exterior mirrors can be set electrically and saved, and recalled at the touch of a button. Executive Seat (option). With the Executive Seat, the rear passenger on the passenger side can enjoy long journeys as well in total relaxation. At the touch of a button, the seat moves into a comfortable reclining position. Through a combination of leg and foot supports, a comfortable surface for lying down is created. Chauffeur package (option). The front passenger seat can be moved forward electrically by a further 77 mm. This makes the journey for the rear passenger sitting behind a great deal more relaxed. The appreciably larger footwell makes it easier to find a position in which to rest; this is supported further by a footrest that can be electrically extended. First Class Rear (option). The extended business console turns the rear of the car into a travelling office with two seats. Each has USB and 12 volt sockets and heated cupholders; and optional extras such as fold-down tables help to make travelling and working as comfortable as possible. The ENERGISING massage function is operated through COMAND Online. The designo Exclusive nappa leather upholstery in deep sea blue/silk beige shown in the picture is only available with Edition 1. Comfort 61 Comfort Light and climate control. Perfection means attending to everything, even the air. The AIR-BALANCE package ionises the air and cleans and scents it with one of four atmospheric scents, if so desired. In this way, it does not need to be down solely to the ambient lighting to create a first class relaxing or stimulating S-Class atmosphere. Ambient lighting (option, standard for the long wheelbase version and the S 500). With its pleasant and indirect light, the ambient lighting creates a unique feeling of wellbeing throughout the whole of the interior. Seven different colours and five dimming levels are available to create a personalised lighting ambience. AIR-BALANCE package (option). The vehicle interior can be given a very individual scent with the AIR-BALANCE package. Four different and sophisticated scents are available to choose from according to your personal taste. Over and above this the air quality can be improved through ionising with oxygen and filtering the air from outside the vehicle. THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control (standard). With two climate zones and three air flow settings, the automatic climate control creates an individual climate of well-being on board. The driver and passenger can set their temperatures independently of each other. There are five different and separate settings for the temperature of the footwells in the front. An active carbon filter for fine dust keeps dust, soot and pollen at bay and reduces smells and pollutants in the air. The AIR-BALANCE package, which is inclusive of ionisation, air filtering and scenting, provides first class S-Class air quality. 63 64 Roof systems and privacy. The roof systems and tinted side windows on the new S-Class provide the ideal conditions for working and relaxing. If so desired, the panorama roof will open up in stages to reveal the sun. The tinted panes of glass keep both its heat and the unwanted attention of people outside the vehicle at bay. Panoramic sliding sunroof (option). With its large glazed areas, this roof system provides a particularly bright and friendly ambience in the interior. It consists, in the rear, of a fixed panoramic glass sunroof; and at the front of an electrically operated outer sliding glass roof. In addition, two electric roller blinds afford the passengers some shade when the sun is shining strongly. Two practical features of the panoramic sliding sunroof ensure a high degree of drive comfort. The glass roof automatically adjusts the height at which it is raised to the current vehicle speed. At higher speed the glass roof lowers itself, thereby lowering the noise level and air circulation. The opposite occurs at low speeds. The panoramic sliding sunroof also reacts by itself to rain: if it is open at the time, it automatically goes into the tilt position and stops water getting into the interior. When the vehicle has been switched off, the panoramic sliding sunroof can be opened and closed from outside the vehicle. The “summer opening” and “convenience closing” functions can be activated by the electronic ignition key, by pressing the appropriate buttons for longer. If the interior has been heated up by the sun’s rays, this function can be used to ventilate the vehicle prior to getting in. To do this, the side windows open and close in addition to the glass roof. The panoramic sliding sunroof has an obstruction sensor to prevent a hand, for example, being caught in it. If the system senses something in the way, it immediately ceases closing the roof and retracts it a little, along with the sunblinds, if appropriate. Tinted heat insulating glass (option). Tinted heat insulating glass for the rear windows protects passengers in the rear from unwelcome attention and/or direct sunshine. At the same time the tinted glass emphasises the sportiness of the vehicle. Comfort 65 66 AMG S 63 AMG exterior.
