ESP compares the driver’s intended course, via steering and braking inputs, to the vehicle’s response, via lateral acceleration, rotation (yaw) and individual wheel speeds. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as needed to help correct understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing). ESP incorporates the functions of Automatic Slip Control, which senses drive-wheel slip and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels, and/or reduces excess engine power, until control is regained.1 6.1 seconds (2003 figure. Sensotronic is an electrohydraulic braking system which transmits brake pressure individually to each wheel based on driver input and various vehicle parameters. Sensotronic more precisely controls brake pressure at each wheel during normal braking, emergency stopping and ESP operation.4 Soft Stop precisely modulates brake pressure as the car approaches a stop during normal braking. Automatic brake drying applies the brakes lightly and briefly based on windshield wiper use and driver braking intervals, to reduce moisture on the brake surfaces in wet weather. Predictive brake priming sets the brake pads nearer the discs when the driver quickly releases the accelerator, for faster brake response. ABS senses impending wheel lockup under heavy braking and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together (to help maintain stability) as needed up to 30 times per second, to prevent lockup and maintain steering ability. Sensotronic eliminates the pedal pulsation commonly associated with conventional brake systems and ABS. Brake Assist senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal and immediately applies maximum available power boost, potentially reducing the overall stopping distance by helping to eliminate the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough. Letting up on the brake pedal releases Brake Assist.5 SL 500 SL 55 AMG SL 600 100.8 in/2,560 mm 178.5 in/4,535 mm 51.0 in/1,295 mm, top up 72.0 in/1,827 mm 61.4 in/1,559 mm 60.5 in/1,537 mm 0.29, top up 4,065 lb/1,844 kg 100.8 in/2,560 mm 178.5 in/4,535 mm 51.0 in/1,295 mm, top up 72.0 in/1,827 mm 61.8 in/1,569 mm 61.1 in/1,551 mm 0.30, top up 4,319 lb/1,959 kg 100.8 in/2,560 mm 178.5 in/4,535 mm 51.0 in/1,295 mm, top up 72.0 in/1,827 mm 61.4 in/1,559 mm 60.5 in/1,537 mm 0.29, top up 4,429 lb/2,010 kg INTERIOR DIMENSIONS Headroom Legroom Shoulder room Cabin capacity Trunk capacity, top up top down SL 500 SL 55 AMG SL 600 37.7 in/957 mm, top up 42.9 in/1,089 mm 54.0 in/1,372 mm 57.8 cu ft/1,637 liters 10.2 cu ft/288 liters 7.3 cu ft/206 liters 37.7 in/957 mm, top up 42.9 in/1,089 mm 54.0 in/1,372 mm 57.8 cu ft/1,637 liters 11.2 cu ft/317 liters 8.3 cu ft/235 liters 37.7 in/957 mm, top up 42.9 in/1,089 mm 54.0 in/1,372 mm 57.8 cu ft/1,637 liters 10.2 cu ft/288 liters 7.3 cu ft/206 liters 1 Please obey local speed laws. 2 AMG 18" wheels and accompanying high-speed-rated tires provide substantially increased treadwear and reduced ride comfort compared to H-rated tires. Serious wheel and tire damage may occur if the vehicle is operated on rough or damaged road surfaces or upon encountering road debris or obstacles. 3 W-rated and Y-rated tires are optimized for performance driving and may provide reduced ride comfort, increased tire noise, substantially increased treadwear and greater susceptibility to damage compared with H-rated tires. 4 No system, no matter how sophisticated, can repeal the laws of physics or overcome careless driving actions. That’s quicker than any other retractable hardtop in production. Top down, you have the exhilarating freedom of a roadster and unlimited views of the sky above. With the top up, the insulated doublepanel aluminum roof offers a sleek hardtop-coupe profile along with the inherent security of a closed car. With the SL, you really can have the best of both worlds. Using a seamless integration of electronics and hydraulics, the SL’s retractable hardtop operates with smooth and quiet efficiency. And for easier top-down access to the luggage area, the SL’s Easy-Pack automatic loading aid tilts up the folded roof by approximately 20 degrees with the touch of a button. It’s a feature you’ll appreciate when you’re placing cargo into the 7.3 cubic feet of top-down trunk space. With the top up, storage expands to 10.2 cubic feet. Either way, there’s enough room to store two sets of golf clubs, just in case you enjoy sports other than driving. And to enjoy the open vistas of summer when the weather turns cold, consider our optional Panorama tinted-glass roof with a retractable sunshade. This is a car meant to be enjoyed all year round. Confidence to make every corner When it comes to sharp corners and sweeping curves, the SL can handle more than its share. The SL’s harmony of self-assured cornering and a relaxed ride is rooted in an extremely well-balanced independent multilink suspension featuring four links at each front wheel and five links at each rear wheel. Adding to your composure is Active Body Control (ABC) — perhaps the most advanced active suspension in production — and the sophisticated cornering technology of our Electronic Stability Program (ESP ).1 Everything turns your way with responsive rack-and-pinion steering that includes speed-sensitive power assist and the convenience of the SL’s tight turning radius. All serve to give the SL incredible poise, whether you find yourself in the throes of a hairpin turn or the expanse of an endless straightaway. 1 No system, no matter how sophisticated, can repeal the laws of physics or overcome careless driving actions. Please always wear your seat belt. SL 500. an active partnership a turn for the better Active Body Control. It was a very special partnership with Formula One racing that led to the development of Active Body Control. Fortunately, you no longer need to be a racecar driver to benefit from the technology. With ABC, body lean and brake dive become almost nonexistent, while ride comfort flourishes. Choose the sport mode via a switch on the console for even sharper handling response and virtually flat cornering. Even raise or lower the ride height for greater ground clearance or improved aerodynamic efficiency. Whatever the driving conditions, whatever your mood, ABC is capable of meeting your desires. Electronic Stability Program. Your outlook for every corner, come rain or shine, improves dramatically with the technology of ESP working for you behind the scenes. ESP constantly monitors your steering and braking inputs through a curve, and calculates whether your SL is following your intended path. Should the vehicle deviate, ESP instantly acts to restore control by braking individual wheels and/or reducing excess engine torque.1 Whether it’s a tight corner or a slippery stretch of asphalt, ESP helps you stay in command of the road. Strength in numbers A smooth transfer of power In the SL 600, V-12 power is transplanted to the wheels through our driver-adaptive 5-speed automatic transmission, while the SL 500 boasts huge news: It’s the first sports car ever with a 7-speed automatic — gear changes are not only smoother, but quicker as well, allowing the SL 500 to spend more time at the peak of its torque curve. Both transmissions feature the hands-on control of Touch Shift, which lets you make manual-style downshifts and allow upshifts by tapping the shift lever left or right from Drive. Or hold the shifter to the left, and the transmission will automatically preselect the optimum gear for maximum acceleration. 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-12 Count on an exhilarating rush every time you experience the powerful acceleration of an SL. Feel the unmistakable rumble of the SL 500’s eight cylinders reverberating through your soul, or the SL 600’s exotic dance of 12 cylinders in perfect rhythm. In each engine, power is refined through an efficient 3-valve-per-cylinder design, with integrated fuel injection and twin-spark ignition. Drive with a sense of urgency, and an adaptive accelerator provides even quicker throttle response. There are many superlatives that can be used to describe the performance of the SL, but we’ll allow the numbers to speak for themselves. 300 5.0-liter V-8 280 260 POWER: 302 hp 240 340 220 320 300 200 TORQUE: 339 lb-ft 280 180 260 160 140 120 100 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 500 420 380 600 520 300 260 360 220 180 140 100 1 2 3 4 5 RPM x1000 SL 500 V-8 SL 600 twin-turbo V-12 The throaty growl of the SL 500’s 5.0-liter V-8 signals the presence of 302 healthy horses and a prodigious 339 lb-ft of torque at just 2,700 rpm. It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. INNOVATIVE FEATURES AND OPTIONS (PAGE 2 OF 2) COMAND. The COMAND system lets you control various systems from a single in-dash unit with a 5" colorLCD screen. The Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation system can calculate the quickest route, or shortest route, and even find nearby points of interest.1 And to keep your navigation map CDs as up-to-date as possible, ask your dealer about our Navigation Update (NavUP ) subscription program, which lets you receive annual updates for up to three years at significant savings. When you’re not using COMAND to navigate, you can use the in-dash CD player to listen to your favorite music. And controls on the multifunction steering wheel also let you pick a CD from the 6-disc changer, choose a CD track, change the radio station and adjust the volume. The COMAND system even works in conjunction with our Motorola V60i™ portable digital phone,2 automatically muting the radio or pausing the CD when a call comes in. 1 While the navigation system provides directional assistance, the driver must remain focused on safe driving behavior, including paying attention to traffic and street signs. The driver should utilize the system’s audio cues while driving and should only consult the map or verbal displays once the vehicle has been stopped in a safe place. CD-ROM maps do not cover all areas nor all routes within an area. 2 Standard on SL 600, optional on SL 500 and SL 55 AMG. For safety reasons, we encourage the driver to stop the vehicle in a safe place before answering or placing a call. Always plug the phone into the cradle for use inside the vehicle. A sense of security B only a Mercedes can provide At Mercedes-Benz, we take an integrated approach to safety engineering, reflecting a desire to build vehicles that optimize both the driver’s ability to avoid an accident and the car’s potential for protecting all on board should an impact occur. The SL’s robust structure and advanced safety technologies allow it to pass our rigorous battery of no fewer than 28 different crash tests — more than any single government currently requires. Standard safety features, including our Electronic Stability Program (ESP), traction control and emergency-sensing Brake Assist, can be appreciated every day. Others — including dual front and side-impact air bags, seat-belt Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs ) and belt force limiters — you may never experience. But in any case, you can rest assured knowing that these sentinels of safety will be on guard for you. Stressed for success. The structural formula for the SL starts with an impressive list of individual ingredients: high-strength/low-alloy steel in critical areas, a heavy-gauge-steel pop-up roll bar, and an extremely rigid laser-welded variablethickness floorpan. Add in legendary MercedesBenz engineering expertise, and the result is an integrated vehicle structure that gives you a tremendous sense of safety and security, as well as precise handling and a controlled ride. ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP ) HIGH-STRENGTH/LOW-ALLOY STEEL FRONT/SIDE AIR BAGS In corners, ESP helps to correct oversteer (fishtailing) or understeer (plowing ) by selectively applying the brakes to one or more wheels and/or by reducing excess engine power.1 HSLA steel is used in critical areas throughout the body to create an exceptionally rigid structure, minimizing chassis flex for improved handling and integrity. Driver and front passenger are each provided with a front air bag with dualstage inflation as well as the additional protection of door-mounted head /thorax side-impact air bags. The driver is also provided with a knee air bag.3 AUTOMATIC SLIP CONTROL SIDE-IMPACT PROTECTION Automatic Slip Control helps reduce wheelspin during hard acceleration or on slippery road surfaces. Reinforced crossmembers, doors and door sills are part of an integrated safety structure that affords formidable protection against side impacts. Air bag security. Every SL offers the comprehensive protection of five standard air bags. No other class competitor offers more. It starts with dual-stage front air bags that vary their inflation rates in response to impact severity. To help protect you in side impacts, every SL also comes with innovative door-mounted head /thorax side-impact air bags. And a driver’s knee air bag provides cushioning to help protect the driver’s legs in a collision that exceeds the system’s deployment threshold.3 BRAKE ASSIST Complementing the antilock brakes, Brake Assist can sense a panic stop and automatically apply all available power brake boost instantly, potentially reducing stopping distances.2 ADVANCED CRUMPLE ZONES In a frontal impact, full-width crossmembers and an ellipsoidal bulkhead help transfer some impact energy around the cabin for added protection. In the rear, a full-width aluminum crossmember contributes to increased strength and better energy absorption in rear impacts. EMERGENCY TENSIONING DEVICES AND BELT FORCE LIMITERS In either a front or rear impact exceeding a preset threshold of severity, ETDs remove seat-belt slack to help hold you in place. Belt force limiters help reduce the peak deceleration forces on belted occupants. POP-UP ROLL BAR Behind the driver, an automatic pop-up roll bar made from heavy-gauge steel stands ready to deploy in 0.3 second if sensors detect an impending rollover or if the vehicle sustains a front, side or rear impact of sufficient severity.5 SOS BUTTON Should an air bag or Emergency Tensioning Device ( ETD ) deploy, the system automatically initiates an SOS call to summon help to your location.4 1 No system, no matter how sophisticated, can repeal the laws of physics or overcome careless driving actions. Please always wear your seat belt. 2 Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake system maintenance, and tire and road conditions. 3 WARNING: THE FORCES OF A DEPLOYING AIR BAG CAN CAUSE SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY TO A CHILD UNDER AGE 13. A CHILD UNDER 13 MUST NOT BE A PASSENGER IN THIS VEHICLE UNLESS THE CHILD IS BELTED INTO AN APPROPRIATE, PROPERLY INSTALLED BABYSMART-COMPATIBLE CHILD SEAT.
