And there are enough luxurious extras to make sure you get there in style. Thanks to recent technological developments, the new diesel engines have a smaller capacity with higher torque. The new 2.8-litre auto engine has a torque of 450 Nm @ 1600-2400 rpm and a power output of 130 kW @ 3400 rpm, while the manual has a torque of 420 Nm @ 1400-2600 rpm and a power output of 130 kW @ 3400 rpm. Once again the driver is on the winning end, as these innovations translate into more than just better power, but lower fuel consumption too. The petrol motor line-up has been expanded to include a new 2.7-litre petrol engine with a towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes, torque of 245 Nm @ 4000 rpm and a power output of 122 kW @ 5200 rpm. This petrol option operates off the new six-speed transmission, which has numerous advantages, including lower fuel consumption and a more eco-friendly drive. The choice is yours: 2x4, 4x4, six-speed manual or auto. And if you choose a 4x4, you now have a conveniently located electronic switch that replaces the range change lever, allowing you to change between 4WD, 4WD LOW and 2WD with a flick of the wrist. When on the open road, you’re in for smooth sailing – the addition of the sixth gear in both the manual and auto options means the gear ratio spread has been optimised and cruising revs per minute have been lowered. Engine sound has also been reduced, meaning a much quieter drive, ideal for exploring the great outdoors. As part of this advancement, your first gear is now sharper and shorter, which bumps up the take-off power and increases the pulling power – just right for towing. Not only does this mean less engine noise, it’s also a way to better fuel economy – perfect for you and the environment. For those who desire efficiency, Eco Drive Mode can be activated at the touch of a button. When the vehicle is being driven efficiently, the Eco Lamp on the Multi-Information Display will illuminate to let you know that you’re on the right track. While moving up or down the gears, the new Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) anticipates your changes then matches the engine speed to the transmission speed, preventing jerks and drastic drops in speed after gears are changed, resulting in an even rev count, seamless shifting and achieving high fuel efficiency. The 2.4 and 2.7-litre models come with cruise control – perfect for trips out into the country, allowing you to sit back, admire the view and relax on longer stretches of road. No matter where you go and whatever the weather – mountain pass or overpass, torrential downpour or a desert sandstorm – you’re always comfortable and in control in your Fortuner. Bumpy outrides are history. Improved suspension offers more stability and better handling responses. The size of the shock absorbers has also been increased, giving you more comfort over small vibrations, and a repositioned lateral rod reduces movement when exploring rough roads. But the advancements go much deeper than the upgraded suspension. At the core of the Fortuner’s off-road prowess is its frame. The entire frame structure has been redeveloped, improving torsional and bend rigidity, ensuring durability, drive quality, comfort and, most importantly, safety. The Fortuner is equally at home navigating the tight turns of a steep overgrown path leading to a secluded cabin, as it is manoeuvring down a white-knuckle rocky descent. Hill Assist Control (HAC) detects when you’re on a slope and automatically engages so that the vehicle doesn’t roll back. To prevent the wheels from locking up on tricky downhills in the 4x4 models, the Downhill Assist Control* system takes command of the vehicle’s ABS, controlling brake pressure in situations when engine braking isn’t enough. To make sure you stay cool and in control, the radiator has been improved to balance the power of the new engines. This reduces the risk of overheating – no matter how severe the environment or how big the load being towed.
